Title: An Idea
Post by: Delfer on August 08, 2008, 04:57:25 pm

Has anyone ever thought of what to do if there was an emergency and you needed to get the other guards to your location really fast but you couldn't take the time to run to the barracks and ring the bell? You needed to get people where you were and very fast but in a IC kinda way? I remember when Take was in trouble at the hospital I had to set trees on fire to get people's attention but that was kinda lame for rp and that's how I thought if this idea.

What if we had a horn that could be issued to guards/civvies and you would emote the horn being sounded from so-and-so(Provided you're in a reasonable range of Cove town/where everyone is) over GC and others could come to the sound of it to help.

The horn should only ever be sounded in extreme emergencies and if you sounded it without good reason then you'd receive a fine or some kind of punishment. We could also use the in-game items 'Fire Horns' and carry them with us.

Please tell me what you think
(Sorry this post seems rushed :()

Sounds rather interesting actually. Also time-typical. The thought that strikes me when reading this, is "Why haven't anyone thought about it before?" :P

I'll vote in favor for this idea.

Cheers for this idea! It's not as horribly OOC as the old CDPL com crystals, but it'll do the job ;> (Oh how the GM's whined on me... *Laughs to himself*

Well... I'm not meaning to urinate on anyone's parade, here... But as far as I can remember, Cove has always had a horn/bell.

Guild Chat announcements such as *A sharp and piercing whistle can be heard from all those nearby*

It's just what has always been done, really, unless people are feeling lazy. When we're trying to get people IG as well, before we ICQ people, we emote something like *Starts ringing the bell loudly at the side of the Barracks*

Kelly tends to use a whistle for events when she needs it, but it is very rarely. The bell at the Barracks, however, used to be quite commonly used. :)

Seconded Kelly on this one; ever since Guild Chat made an appearance in UO it's been used by RP guilds to (realistically) signal rallies and calls-to-arms.

As always however, please do not abuse this system and consider the circumstances before use; especially if you're under threat of someone and need help.

Just as you wouldn't send out ICQ's going "amagad helpz!" whilst you have a knife to your throat, you also wouldn't be practicing your bell-ringing!

Other than that, only use it when necessary; the more things get used, the more they blend into the background.

Try to use it for events and call-to-arms only; not for when you want someone to talk to, or to drink with!

Indeed there has always been a bell to be rung at the barracks in times of need or to signal the start of trainings or parades etc.

And available guardsmen I would hope would rally to the call.

What we need to make clear here is that the bell shouldn't be used for trivial matters and that pigeons (ICQ) should be used when at all possible, but as Graem points out you wouldn't send a pigeon or ring a bell with a knife at your throught.

As always this "alarm system" should be used within an RP context.
