Title: Silent Nights
Post by: Calico on June 10, 2005, 02:30:28 am
As the sun sets, the shadows slink and coil out of the jungles and into the sand stone streets of Trinsic. One might find nightfall within the city to be as dangerous as that in the wilds just over the wall; if not more so, the jungle beasties are at least fearful of fire light. It seemed the only thing not wandering the streets at night were the guards. Drow, dark wytches, and other less than reputable persons, even some that would like to appear proper by the light of day. The flickers of torch light does nothing to keep them at bay.

The night was still young and a grubby looking wench was attempting to flirt with a well dressed man, as he left the Keg and Anchor. Copper eyes glittered like a felines from the lower branches of the tree just to one side until Kate dipped her chin, peering out at the walk way through her lashes. Not that the pair had noticed, the stealther doubted they would have noticed a purple potion dropping at that point either. The woman was looking to earn some coin and the man seemed to lost in his bottle of ale to take heed.

Kate didn't know the pair, didn't care, wasn't on any particular sort of mission; she was just there. Because she could be, and because of the freedom the night allowed. Calico the buccaneer, bent on revenge, had learned to track some one who did not wish to be found. Kate of Cove was was enjoying combining that with the subtleties she learned as a nobleman's daughter. She could be as in conspectus at the furniture, thought it was easier in her current garb than in a flashy gown.

A feral grin curved the hidden woman's lips. Her long bright hair was coiled in braids around her head, covered with a ubiquitous bandits bandana. She thouraly enjoyed the irony of a fashionable courtly style, meant to set one apart at a gathering, being equally useful in clandestine activities. Finely fitted, leather wrapped the woman's lean form as natural and as smooth as the mists that wrapped around the lamp posts of the bay streets. Soft sole thigh boots fitting snugly to her legs were laced and worn well so as to muffle her footsteps. While her perch on the lower branches of the tree couldn't exactly have been described as deft, it was nearing that with nightly practice.

Yew had shown her her weaker points. She was horrible in the woods. Twigs leave, animals, they were all beyond Kate. She grown up in stone halls, she'd lived on ships deck. She'd never felt compelled to clime trees or sneak off into the shrubs with some lad. Birds startled her, her very presence seemed to spook mounts, and rangers had an annoying habit of striking up casual conversations with her while she was "hidden." That and every Yewish bastard has a dog. A beginners mistake in Yew had got her briefly captured, and Kat had almost lost her nerve because of the incident. The sprawling sandstone avenues of Trinsic were much more to her experience and tastes.

Any time she happened on a Drow Kate made it a point to follow them. They were paranoid, painfully good at disappearing, and had not compunction about stabbing where they thought some one might be hiding; inspiring targets. Some nights she came to follow up on some thing interesting she'd stumbled across the night before. Others she'd pick a random mark and keep with them just to see how long she could and to figure out any weaknesses in her methods.

The self-imposed odd nightly hours had broken her sleep into two shortened bouts just before sun rise, and slightly after sun set. The frequent use of public moongates were hell on her majick allergies and had affected her appetite resulting in the lost what little extra weight she'd kept even through her strenuous combat training; Kate was becoming sinewy.  Her eyes were earning little red marks at their edges from the lack of sleep.

She'd never been happier.
