Title: The Reluctant Captain's Log
Post by: Raiden Morana on May 29, 2018, 10:08:06 am
SUNDAY 27th MAY.

Feck! Feck, feck, feck...

How the bloody hell did this happen? Captain... AGAIN!

Shite! Shite, shite, shite...

Promotions and demotions parade this eve certainly was one for the ages!

Pleased for Sanderson! She's a hard working lass and a bloody good soldier and friend. Made up that she's Corporal again. Tis well deserved! And Keres too.The Grenadiers need a firm leader and I can't think of anyone better for the job... Other than myself... But my days in the Baron's Own are behind me now. So he'll do, heh.

Hoagie as Commander!? Honestly... Can't think of a better fella to lead us. Again, overdue and well deserved. Hopefully HE doesn't crumble under the new weight of crippling responsibility, heh. He has a good bunch of officers around him though, for the most part... Hopefully he can delegate better than I could when I was Commander...

I Honestly thought Shadwell would be bumped up to Captain, with Hoagie being Commander. Nay problem with that, so I nearly pissed my kilt when I was called out of the line. It's a grand honour and all but aye, I was just getting used to being back in the ranks with the lads. Sergeant would have suited but bloody Captain? Feck... Just as long as there's nay as much paperwork as I remember and they don't make me ride a bloody horse when I don't need to, I suppose I'll be fine. Feck...

Another bald Grenadier 'Smash Bruddah' returns!

And since when did we have bloody trainees? Have I really been away THAT long? Tis a bit too Yewish for my liking. Grand to see the Baron tossed that badge into the sea. And aye, saddens me to say, but when the new Arcanist Corporal got called forward, part of me wanted her badge in the ocean too... I need to give her a chance but aye, that night when the Templar questioned that lass... Still leaves a bitter taste.

Nay time to think too much about that though, as Tibby whisked us off on a recruitment run to Luna, New Haven and Britain... City architecture certainly has changed since my time in the colonies and nay for the better. Especially the Capital. But I suppose that's Royalists for you. I think we managed to snag a recruit or two. Getting them fairly steadily now. Hopefully they don't die a painful death before reaching Watchman.

And then when we returned to the barracks, another long departed Covian returned. Bloody Ahmed Al Maktoum! Whether he'll be ready for active service again I nay know but nothing but respect and fond memories of the Grenadier from when I was a raw recruit myself. Grand to see him back, though he looked a little frail and out of sorts. Grand to see Gimbly back in the ranks too. The Grenadiers should be in a good place moving forward.

... Bloody Captain, feck...

Railen... I miss you lass. I miss the boy... You'd know what to say. How to share my burden... IF there is an Avatar, I hope he's watching over you both better than I ever did.

[ooc]This is all OOC knowledge, unless Raiden shares his thoughts and feelings with you IC[ooc]

MONDAY 28th MAY

This eve I caught up with an expedition to Ilshenar. Nay idea where. My geography aint the best when I'm outside the Shire. Some might argue it's nay great when I'm in the Shire. Honesty or Honour I think it was? The one with the hand mural by the portal, anyway... Cowin was in charge and he led us to our doom on a mission to rival some of Demarian's in days gone by. Heh.

It's safe to say we got knocked on our arses a few times. But to be fair, the buggers that swarmed on us were nasty and numerous too. And whilst we slew them in their droves, the healing needed to be far better than what it was. Nay the first time I've said that recently. And whilst I wanted to let Cowin lead as much as possible, I found myself calling orders in the mayhem at times.

Terrathons, Meer, undead and an ugly bloody dragon found their ends at Covian hands, plus the lads had earlier massacred a battalion of cyclops and titans... But it was largely a rearguard action, as we were hounded from one direction and then the next by many a goldie. Everyone made it back in one piece though, with most of our kit intact. The men are either untrained, still rusty or just bloody lazy. Either way, the only thing that'll help is more training and more patrols with a focus on orders and discipline.

As we licked our wounds back at the barracks, Kelly was busying herself in the stores and made sure the patrol had their lost kit replaced. She also passed me the Captain's red sash. She's a good friend and she's looked after me since my return. I still feel like a bloody burden on her though.

TUESDAY 29th MAY

Another mission to Ilshenar and a return to where we'd got our arses kicked last eve. We had a few more men this time though and the soon to be Scout Roichar did a pretty good job in command. So much so that Commander 'Facey' bollocked me for shouting FORM when a bloody great big golem sprang out of the woods. Old habits I guess, but he was right. I just didn't want that clockwork killer to kick anyone's back door in.

The mission was long and largely uneventful compared to last eve. We dealt with all threats methodically and the new recruits acquitted themselves well. The healing was better but there were plenty of old heads seeing to that.

We called in at a deserted tavern for a well earned breather. Tibby's nay a bar keep, that's for sure. But Kelly did some snooping in the cellar and we were able to liberate some ale for the lads.

Once back at the barracks, the Commander gave us another couple of acceptance speeches. I could tell the lads were gettin' a bit bored, even more so when some bloody recruit started banging on about running for Governor Of Skara Brae or summat. Bloody delusions of grandeur or what? Anyway, I stepped up and put everyone out of their misery by dismissing the men to the tavern.

I was just settling into my first ale when there was a commotion outside. Some flappy bloody gargoyle and deadite had a commoner hostage and started spouting off about the end of the age of men. Heh. Again, delusions of grandeur. We chased them off but I nay think it's the last we'll see of such things. Need to keep the men sharp, double the patrols and sentries. More trainings. Much to do Raidy, much to do.

WEDNESDAY 30th MAY

This whole 'peace' thing baffles me. Don't get me wrong, it was grand to see Kelly's market bustling with folk from near and far but his 'thing' of me and Wilkes being nice to eachother is a tad unsettling!

I've always had a grudging respect for him as an adversary. We've exchanged some fine insults over the years and knocked ten bells of shit out of eachother on the battlefield but... If this peace carries on much longer, we might even become mates...? That makes me a little nervous...

To be fair to him, he congratulated me on my promotion and bought me hat off one of the market stalls as a gift. I nay know whether he was taking the piss or not, given it's colour, but I like to think it was all well meant.

When I took over Kelly's stall whilst she got the bagball pitch set up, I felt obliged to make an effort with Wilkes. I complimented him on his new clean shaven look, expressing how much younger it made him appear and then I proceeded to sell him some trinkets. I started high at 400 gold pieces and he offered 325 but I managed to barter him down to 295. I think that's how it works...

Will peace last long enough for the 'bromance' to continue?

One of the plus points to this peace thing though is getting to chat up Waywatchers. The second one in a week! Old habits die hard... Heh. I wonder whatever happened to Ares..? She was a fine lass. We shared some moments... Lots of moments... The type of moments that keep you warm at night when there's a chill wind blowing in off the bay. And the type of moments that might be construed as treason or fraternizing with the enemy at least...

Anyway, this Siuan lass seemed pleasant enough. I managed to sell her a pair of second hand boots too. I wasn't really able to turn on the Raiden charm though, as I got harangued into playing bloody bagball. The new lad, Duncan, he looks like a player! I was nay much use though, my knee was playing up and I got bloody antlered in the arse by a Keres. And that cheeky bloody Scout, Melior gave me a sly dig in the ribs too!

As the market wound down I helped escort the Baron into the tavern and excused myself for the evening. Kelly was just finishing up changing to go to the tavern herself when I got in. She scrubbs up bloody well and I caught myself staring at her arse. Hopefully she didn't notice, given that she had her back to me and all. She gave me a big hug on her way out. She's a grand lass. I'm lucky to have her around.

SUNDAY 3rd JUNE.

Nothing much to report before last eve, apart from filling out bloody paperwork and a day's leave. It was good to get back out there with the men though... Even if my bloody knee is killing me.

Our lord and baron has always been eccentric. At times bordering on the unstable. I can't say I know him well but serving in the Grenadiers for so many years, I suppose I have been exposed to his whims more than most but last night's parade... I'm not sure if he was playing to the crowd or whether we're about to witness one of those 'whims'... Which usually ends up with us all marching off to war.

I felt for Kelly as he stood before the parade, 'channeling' Vince via a golden skull. Parlour trick or insanity? At times, it's a fine line with him. I gave the lass an encouraging smile and hopefully she wasn't too perturbed. She had strength enough to give me a dig in the ribs for staring at the new Arcanist officer cadet's arse. Heh. So hopefully it wasn't too upsetting for her.

My head spins with Cowin. He wants to be a Grenadier, he doesn't want to be a Grenadier, he wants to be a Grenadier. Uggh... It's not a bloody bride trying on a dress. It's a serious business. It's not like any other squad in Cove, feck, it's not like any other unit in all of Sosaria. It's duty beyond duty and he and Keitaro have forsaken that duty once already. As I have too in truth but at least I have brains enough nay to go back.

After the parade we headed to Yew for some battle games with the militia. I'm sure Wilkes put our team at a disadvantage from the off. Up against Tibby, Hoagie, Gimbly, a Corsair, Pickles and that lass Nadia and her tainted blade.

That said, we did well, even if Wilkes announced us as narrow losers in both rounds. I'd say we were worthy of a draw both times. Only timing of his calls robbing us of victory, the bastard.

We finished up with a last man standing. As is usually the case, cowardly witches, elves and the Waywatcher sought what cover they could whilst the rest of us knocked the crap out of eachother. One by one the weakest were weeded out. Leaving Gimbly, Hoagie, Myself and a hardy Footman, or so we thought. Once Gimbly fell, Keitaro revealed himself and entered the fight fresh as a daisy.

The combat dragged on a while as we all seemed reasonably matched and no teaming took place. We even took fire from the sidelines before Wilkes ordered us to remove our armour to bring about a swift resolution. Hoagie fell first and then the bloody sneaky elf tripped me up too. Lucky bastard.

Then it was off to the tavern to drown my sorrows and nurse my knee. I thanked Radek for hosting us and making us feel welcome. Even used his given name. He did seem genuinely gutted when I excused myself, heh.

Ugghh... I need to see Kobra about this knee.

MONDAY 4th JUNE.

Fecking knee... I really need to see Kobra...

Thankfully a mountain of bloody papers kept me from getting to the rehearsals for Hoagie's play. It's not my cup of tea really, hence my strategic late arrival. Though it was grand to see it well attended by Covians and foreigners alike.

That lad I had heard about was there. The bard who had been performing at the Goblin. Turns out it's Gregor's grandson! Hoh! He seems like a good lad. A little nervous and easily excitable but he's certainly got something about him.

He embarrassed the shite out of me though. Haha. Making out that I'm some sort of hero, heh... He's seems like a good lad though and he won a part in Hoagie's play, which will do him good.

One of the actresses, the lead in fact, wanted to talk to me privately in the tavern after the rehearsals. Still got it mon, still got it...

Unfortunately though, all she wanted was to interrogate me over the conflict in bloody Jhelom. It was years ago! I can hardly remember last week! I didn't much like some of her insinuations either... Genocide, pillaging and trafficking... I told her straight that the fighting was brutal, house to house, street by street. That we nay saw any civilians and whilst I couldn't answer for Yew or Vesper, that Cove fought with honour and the army with distinction.

She changed her tune a bit then and wanted to discuss trade agreements. I told her to write to the baron and headed of to bed. My knee and her questioning had darkened my mood.

Gregor's bloody grandson eh? Heh... I remember being that starry eyed recruit all those years ago, in awe of the famed Commander Eason. I remember how proud I was to serve under him and how proud I was for him to consider me a friend as our careers progressed.

I never got the chance to regale Serj with how his grandfather took a step to his front and steadied the line against Kaldor. A damn fine soldier. A damn fine Commander and a damn fine friend.

I'll be keeping a watchful eye on the lad.

TUESDAY 5th JUNE.

Tavern night at the Swaggers. I had nay been down for a while, so I thought I'd make an appearance. There were a few of our lads there, along with the local riffraff. Mainly witches as I recall... Pickles, Aylmer and a recruit. Oh and some foo' doing impersonations of the Commander. Though some eijits took him for an orc. Heh.

I got talking to the lass behind the bar. Turns out she's Becca's daughter. She certainly shares her mother's 'charms'. I was sad to hear of Becca's fate on my return to Cove, she was s good lass and her daughter Sioned seems alright too.

I was trying to figure her age and work out if... Anyway. Again I asked after Railen and the boy. I've all but given up hope now. I only have myself to blame. I just hope they are alive and well and making a new life for themselves somewhere, as the alternative is still unbearable to think about.

That lass that was poking around asking questions last night was there too. She seemed less inquisitive this time but she's obviously doing the rounds. She tried to explain the rules of some game being played outside. It seemed pretty childish to me. No brawling, tackling or gouging allowed. Nay wonder the Vesperians are soft.

My knee's still no better. There's nowt for getting old Raidy...

WEDNESDAY 6th JUNE.

Tis fair to say that the Avatarian Church is back in Cove. Quite literally...

The Templar's visits have been more frequent of late, as have reports of increased undead activity within our borders. Such things always seem to go hand in hand...

Anyway... We were charged with assisting Sir Hugo and his brethren cleanse an area of Ilshenar of gargoyles, dark elves and whatever other abominations we might find there before returning to the the desert of Compassion, to cleanse that area (and shrine) of it's impurities too.

We got off to an early start though, heh. We'd not even departed the barracks when a Vesperian elf rode up to us on an overgrown cat and proceeded to insult the Templar. Nay the wisest of moves... The men proceeded to knock him on his arse.

Later that eve, after I'd rested my knee some, I helped with the erection of our new chapel. It was nice to see our fellows from Yew lend a hand... Well, by lend a hand, I mean they mostly watched the rest of us hard at work.

A few confessions, mass and brandings later, the Templar seemed content and thankfully I could retire to my quarters. Actually, retiring nay sounds like a bad idea right now...

THURSDAY 7th JUNE.

Well, well, well... Here we go again.

That stupid bloody elf that got sat on his arse last night had apparently scurried back to his overlords in Vesper and they tried laying down the hammer on us, quoting some slanderous treaty... Heh. So the Baron in his wisdom, arranged a Covian book club outing to the Vesper library, to see if we could track down this treasonous document.

I was a tad late to the party, knee's still playing up and when I got there, two redguards tried barring my way. Using all my years of political acumen, gained whilst the Baron was abroad I barged past them, only to be halted on the stairs be some slow or maybe deaf lass. She nay really got much of what I was saying bless her but needless to say, my Captain's smile won the day and I was able to join the Baron, Hoagie, Shadwell, Keres and others just as they were being escorted out, rather forcibly. Nay the best way to treat your neighbours and allies.

First that ugly elf trying to throw his weight around and now some more of Esca's minions with ideas above their station. Heh. Understandably, the Baron was nay amused so we marched to Yew and struck up an alliance against the Orc, elf and gargoyle loving aggressors in Vesper and promptly returned to the library to destroy this non treaty, just for good measure.

Whatever idiot signed that in the first place was nay a member of the Baronship Household, nor Covian Army and was probably promised a fancy title and five minutes of fame in return for selling out this grand town we call home. What an utter bastard, selling out his countrymen like that. Whether they be near or far.

Our victory complete and with the Vesperians too cowardly to bear arms against us, we returned to Yew to seal the alliance with a well earned ale. But only after some serious leaning! Inside their tavern, I procured a bottle of Trinsican Red for the Baron and he charged me with making sure the men will be fit for battle, should it come to that and to also introduce an elf tax, to smooth things along with the Yewish. He also hinted that I might return to the bronze arms of the Grenadiers... I assured him the main army needed me more than he did with Keres in charge of his bodyguard... Phew!

It was then that I saw her. After all this time. She was trying her best to shrink into the shadowed corner of the tavern but it was her, nay doubt. Aries! Bloody hell. She knew I knew... I knew she knew... Did I catch her smiling? The years had nay dulled her beauty that was for sure. She knew, right? She knew it was me?

I was just about to go over when her Waywatcher Corporal sat down beside me. Bloody hell. I think she's taken a shine to me too these last few weeks.  Nothing is ever straightforward. Ohhhh noooo, that'd be too fecking easy.

Bloody hell, Aries... Har!

SATURDAY 9th JUNE.

She found me lazing under a tree in the orchard. How does she do that? I was alone with my thoughts having held a training and recruit cadre, where I'd extolled the virtues of carrying enough bandages, potions and petals and of how fruit can sustain you before and during a battle... Then their she was, Aries.

Things were awkward. It had been so long. But as we talked and recalled shared memories, things seemed more natural. It sounds like she's struggling fitting back into militia life a little but I told her that I had struggled a little too upon my return to the army, maybe I still am, even now.

We talked until night fell and beyond. She expressed her feelings as they were then and as they are now. She regretted the double lives we both had to lead back then and for any harm she may have brought my way. What's in the past is past I told her. She promised not to put me or those I care about in harm's way ever again. She is such a sweet girl and I hope that's a promise that isn't put to the test any time soon.

Things are different now. But who knows for how long...

Nay sketches tonight. Some things are better left to the imagination. Not that too much happened... Just a tender moment or two as we held eachother briefly.

I feel so old and tired...

SUNDAY 10th JUNE.

Tonight's parade saw a couple of Recruits promoted to Watchman, in front of some foreign dignitaries no less!

Then upon it's conclusion we had the pleasure of a diplomatic visit from Vesper. Esca no doubt filling his breeches due to the actions of his renegade elf and the eijits he left in charge whilst away on leave.

He wanted to ascertain the facts, given that his aides have no doubt filled him full of shite to cover their own backsides. The Baron. Corporal Sanderson and myself put him straight on a few things and even though he tried to pin some further arson at our door. Nay doubt some sort of 'false flag' event, as our glorious Baron rightly pointed out, I think he had a fairer idea of proceedings by the end of our little chat.

To be fair, it seemed that Esca was doing his best to calm the situation but then again, his forces are outnumbered pretty badly and seem ill disciplined at best, so why wouldn't he. I guess time will tell.

With the Vesperian delegation roundly booed upon their departure and Kelly leading an expedition to Tokuno, I took my leave for the evening.

That Serj lad, Gregor's grandson... Shared a laugh or two in the lineup, he seems to be growing in confidence... I think he'll do just fine.

MONDAY 11th JUNE.

After briefing a Light Company hopeful on an intelligence gathering mission to Vesper, I hobbled along to the boxing competition at the barracks. Some interesting attire on show, that's for sure. Certainly not the sweaty, saw dust on the floor, Covian Boxing League that Dell set up all those years ago. Heh.

Young Eason greeted me as I arrived. I have to admit, I'm taking a shine to the lad. He seems about ready for his raise to Watchman, I think. He's a little nervous and still lacks a little confidence in himself but I told him that, showing off your fighting prowess in front of possible future enemies is nay always a good thing. Hold a little back, a little misdirection, surprise them. Hopefully that settled him a bit. He doesn't need to beat his chest to be a good soldier. We all have our merits. His are just as important as wielding a mace or axe.

Then, I saw her. Out of the corner of my eye. She was there, Aries. Stood alone. She just glanced over, right? I excused myself from recruit Eason and made my way over to stand by her. We'd barely exchanged pleasantries when her Corporal dragged her away. I hope she's not going to make life hard for the lass.

I watched the boxing a while and then made my way to the orchard. If Aries could smuggle herself away, I knew she'd look for me there and just as I was dozing, she arrived, nearly giving me a heart attack! And not just from her fine leather clad form.

We talked. We held eachother. We kissed. Getting to know eachother over again after all these years. She's still so bonny. She still doesn't blanch when stroking my cheek. She's still cheeky and fiery. She still makes me smile.

It's been so long since anyone did that...

TUESDAY 12th JUNE.

Finally caught up with Kobra tonight. But then I still had to wait for him to take a look at my knee as he was 'consulting' with some Vesperian bird at our sentry post. It certainly was a long 'consultation' but as soon as enough taxes and tolls had been collected, the sentry was disbanded and we headed to the barracks for him to take a look.

He started cooking something up in a pan, whilst examining my knee. He then pulled some torture like device from his bag of tricks, a brace apparently, and strapped it to my leg to give it support and stop it from giving out. He then smeared the stinky substance he'd been brewing onto my knee, which smarted a bit.

Ligament damage he reckoned, whatever that is. He advised me to get someone to apply the little batches of goo he bagged up for me and then I made my way homeward.

I wonder what Aries is up to this eve. I hope whatever her duty, she's keeping herself safe...

WEDNESDAY 13th JUNE.

I was a tad late getting to the banquet, duty and all but thankfully Hoagie hadn't demolished all the pies. Apparently I'd missed some elf taxing, the murder of one of the Baron's hounds and the appointment of a new Bailiff!

Anyway, proceedings were winding down when I arrived and seeing Wilkes looking in a jovial mood, I asked if I could have a quiet word. We went out onto the balcony, cosy but perhaps a tad too romantic given the company but when I set about asking his blessing to see Aries officially, he told me that the lass had already been to him about the exact same thing. Heh.

To be fair to him, he didn't make me squirm half as much as Dart did that time at the moot and given that relationships between Cove and Yew are better than they were back then and that Wilkes and I seem to be 'bonding', he had no problem with the lass and I seeing one another. He did say there was a condition though and that Aries would explain it. He then went to fetch her. I had no idea she was even at the banquet...

Raiden-Radek, Aries-Raiden... A love triangle of sorts?

She wandered out onto the balcony. She looked amazing. A little tipsy but amazing. We chatted a while and returned to the others. Though I made a quick detour, at pace, with my newly equipped knee brace, to Britain, to acquire the finest bottle of ale my meager purse could afford. Radek's hard bargain. A beer. His all round decency is actually a tad unsettling... Not quite as unsettling as him openly complementing my rugged good looks and general physique but aye. He's turning out to be a good sort.

As one by one and at times two by two, everyone began to leave, Aries and I chatted with Mizuho about the Goblin and I had a nip or two of Hoagie's O'l Touch, before we too made our way home... It took a wee bit longer than expected...

Just hope this bloody peace and alliance with Yew holds...

FRIDAY 15th JUNE.

As I strode towards the barracks this eve I heard the 'whizz-crackle-bang' of arcanists dueling in the arena. Atop the roof, I had to hide my surprise... 'Who's that lass with the red hair?' I asked Tibby as I joined him in leaning against the rail. He grinned and motioned to the Arcanist, who's flame coloured hair escaped the leather cap strapped tightly under his jaw. 'It's Valentine.'

That bloody scoundrel Kas was back in Cove. To be fair, I'd missed him. never usually a dull moment when he's around and when his head is on it, he's a bloody good soldier in the field.

His dueling done, his final salvo almost seeming to blast the very armour off Pickles body (my gaze averted of course), he began to regale us all with tales of woe and debt from his time abroad.

Raiden to Tiberius, upon Kas' return: 'They sent us the wrong Valentine!

I was just about to get my handkerchief out when Aries appeared. Something was different about her. She seemed a little timid, venturing into Cove and into the barracks alone but that wasn't it? Had she changed her hair? Damnit Raiden, you needed to notice if she had, I told myself...

I went over to her, Tibby and Kas tittering just out of earshot. Her armour! She was out of her leathers for sure but now she was an 'Ironarm'. Seems that her Corporal in the Waywatchers tried to forbid her from seeing me, so the lass decided to return to the regular militia.

We retired to the tavern, the whispers behind us still in full flow, bastards. Once there, Aries assured me it was her choice and that she was happy. That's all I needed to hear. We had a lovely night. Though I need to buy myself a can opener now.

Great to see Kas back, though Tibby looked a little distant when we were all talking about old times. Never really seen him like that in all these years...

MONDAY 18th JUNE.

I'd forgotten what a great lass Kelly is... And that is fecking shocking on my part. I feel like I've taken her for granted the last week or two. Her friendship, her comradeship, the roof over my bloody head. Damn shoddy conduct, Raiden.

Hoagie's magnificent production of The Rage Of Raaz was so *something heavily redacted* 'magnificent' that I had to take a brief nap in the barracks but all the revelers in the Goblin soon woke me and I bumped into Kelly as I made my way to the tavern.

'The love of yer life is in there.' The words cut a bit.
'Hoagie?' I offered.
'No, the blondie.' Before I could reply. 'Come on, you can buy me a drink.'

Such an epic performance that I needed a nap!

I was waiting to get served at the bar as Kelly made her way over to plonk herself down next to Aries. I knew what was coming and that's before Pickles handed over the jug of whiskey... Not a shot... Not a bottle... A bloody jug.

Now it usually goes, 'You break his heart, I'll break your face/arms/legs' but noooo, not with Kel'. Oh no... 'You break his heart and I'll kill ye.' Well glad we got that sorted whilst I was stuck down the other end of the bar.

I wandered over and sat at the other side of Aries, Kelly was already plying her with whiskey.

'Aries, Kelly... Kelly, Aries.'
'We've already met.' Aries replied, looking glassy eyed. That whiskey works fast.
'We're bezzie mates... Kel' be nice.'
'I am being nice! Anyway, I'm off. If you bring her home, don't wake me up.' Uggh... Nice one Kel'. Niiiiice.

Aries didn't seem too phased. In fact, she commented that she was happy that I have such protective friends, seeing as she obviously can't be in Cove all the time. She's such a sweetheart.

I love Kelly to bits. Maybe I need to show that more often. But then again, she'd probably tell me to feck off and stop being so bloody soft. I know this though. If anyone hurt her. I wouldn't just kill them. I'd make sure they died bloody hard...

TUESDAY 19th JUNE.

Ever wake up in an unfamiliar bed? In a strange room? With a pretty lass snuggled up to you? Well... I have... A few times to be fair but not for a while and when I woke this morning, it kinda threw me.

The jolt I woke with almost disturbed her. Sweet Aries. Snuggled against me, a stuffy horse clutched to her chest. A frown across her forehead as she slumbered. Hopefully that was just the after affects of the whiskey Kelly was throwing down her neck last eve.

Time for duty. I left her snoozing, as I quietly tugged on my armour and made my way back to Cove. I was a little tardy and joined Keitaro's mission on the fly. Apparently earning the nickname 'Fancy'? Heh. Nowt much fancy about me, except maybe my sash!

Deadites destroyed and Bouras bashed! All in a day's work!

Many undead despatched and the mission complete we returned to Cove. Just as well, as my knee was aching something rotten. After I rested it a bit, I caught up with Raven's patrol to slay some Bouras and masterminded the victory in the 3 vs 3... Tibby and Pickles might have helped a bit too.

Still, we downed Gimbly, Raven and a recruit without loss. Good teamwork and healing.

The knee is getting stronger but it does aches like a bugger!

WEDNESDAY 20th JUNE.

Just a quick note tonight.

I arrived at the barracks just as Tibby's raiding party returned from the orc mines in Yew. He seemed shaky. The men, though none said a word, seemed a little spooked too, or was I imagining it?

Mission accomplished! The orc's mining operation destroyed but Tib' seemed to take it to heart that there wasn't as much loot as we'd hoped for... He was in a world of his own as he wandered up the barracks steps mumbling to himself. He'd seemed away with his thoughts a few times when we were reminiscing with Kas the other night too.

He's always been a rock of a guardsman. Literally. Even from when I was a recruit. I hope he's nay going the way of Gregor. I need to keep an eye on him. For the men's sake... But also... I dunno how much of a mate he considers me but I consider him one and I nay have many left.

I need to keep a bloody eye on myself too. Am I slowing down that much? Just out of practice? Is the knee hampering me? Got knocked over twice tonight by Keitaro. Nay shame in that, his prowess as a warrior is growing but... Ughh... Feels like I'm getting too old... Or maybe too soft?

Feck...

MONDAY 25th JUNE - Part One.

This might be a long one.

So, where to begin? I'm sure we've all forgot stuff. Recruits forget their kit all the time and the like but how do you forget that you are feckin' married and how do you explain that to the girl you love... When she's not actually the person you're married to?

Feck's sake... I think I've been hit over the head one too many times... And right now, it feels like I've just had my guts sliced open.

I started the eve placing recruitment banners and then joined a Yewish patrol, after receiving a raven from Aries. I joined them at Valor. Apt name I reckon, given the ferocity with which we had to fight. "Don't die." She said as she led me in from the portal. She fought bravely, she stood in the face of the onslaught. She stood.

Fighting giant dragons couldn't prepare me for what was to follow...

After making our way back and with our duty complete, Aries took me for a walk through the forests. Where in the feck we were I had nay idea. Somewhere in Yew but aye, nay idea where. She took me to a waterfall and a place where folk get married... MARRIED!

It hit me like one of Tibby's haymakers!

I'd been so feckin self absorbed these last few weeks. I mean, I feel bad enough that I've all but forgotten about Railen, even though she is likely long gone, or worse still, dead... But to be alone, with this gorgeous young lass, in such a beautiful place and to have to break it all to her and likely lose her because of my own selfish bloody pride... I felt like a Besieger had disemboweled me with a rusty feckin spoon.

I think she thought that I thought that she was hinting at marriage, when my mood changed, when all I could think about was her learning about Railen from someone else. I had to tell her. I had to front up. I had to stand.

It's getting hard to write now. I need a break. Just that look in her eyes as she tried to comprehend. "You're married?"

It broke my heart...

MONDAY 25th JUNE - Part Two.

She stood.

I just blurted it all out. How I'd come back to a burnt out ruin of a home. How everywhere I looked or asked, no-one had heard of or seen Railen for years. How the reason for my leaving Cove was to keep her safe, after numerous attempts on her life... How I'd resigned myself to her being lost. How I'd locked that away in my heart, in my mind and that from the moment she'd walked back into my life, Aries was the only thing to fill those places now...

She stood...

Why didn't she run? Why didn't she smash me in the face. I deserved it. Not that I lied, or hid anything on purpose. Hell, I was risking my only happiness in this cruel, Avatarforsaken world by telling her the truth.

"You're the one for me. You always have been, you always will be."

I think I cried.

I know that for a moment it felt like I'd died.

Everything stopped. I couldn't breath. My heart wasn't beating...

I was a fresh recruit again, hopping nervously from one foot to the other, sweaty hands trying to grip my sword, moments away from filling my breeches as the Kaldorians and Samurai charged.

"I know you can fight lads... But can you stand?" Gregor's words echoing in my ears.

We stood. And we fought.

I'd broken her heart. I could turn and run, or I could stand.

I stood...

TUESDAY 26th JUNE.

Where was bloody SANDERSON!

Nay at home. Nay at the barracks. Nay around the shire.

I needed her counsel. She always told it how it is with me. Nay fancying it up or sparing hurt feelings. That's the sort of advice I needed and I could find neither hide nor hair of the lass!

I wanted to do 'something' for Aries. Not to say I was 'sorry' or to make 'amends'. I'd not done owt wrong really... I just wanted to do something nice for her. But what?

Cake! Girls like cake right? And wine! Right off shopping I went! Got a lovely cake. The baker said it had jam in the middle! Lovely! Nice bottle of wine and back to hers... Wait. There's no furniture. I need a table and some chairs. And candles! They love candles!

I sent off a raven to Kelly as I started setting things up at Aries place and paced up and down, waiting for the pretty ex-Waywatcher to arrive.

Still no word from Kelly. Bugger. Down to you Raidy...

I was even more cumbersome than usual, when trying to do romantic stuff. I think she sensed it but she was sweet and whilst we'd already 'made up' some last night, things were still a little awkward... And just I was about to push that awkwardness to new heights, Kelly's raven arrived, thankfully. She was in the Swaggers with Tibby... Ughh. This was going to be fun.

I excused myself, quoting duty and made haste to Vesper.

'Alrigh' bestie!' Kelly was sat in Tib's lap. Both of the flushed with ale. How long had they been at it? The ale I mean... 'Still with the Yewish one?'

'Aye, well, I dunno, maybe... I need some advice Kel.'
'I'm not yer bleeding mother!'
'I think I've fecked it up.' I lowered my voice. 'I sorta forgot to tell her that I might still be married.'
'You 'might' still be married' Came a shocked voice from behind me.
'Bloody hell Pickles! How good are your ears!?'
Tib roared with laughter. 'The 'ole tavern knows now!'
'Feck! Kel...' I looked at her almost pleadingly.
'Ugghh... Right, don't go telling her you love her, or buying her stuff. It makes you look like a pussy!'
'Uhhhmmm... I might have already bought her a cake. That's alright, isn't it?' I might have already told her I loved her too, gah. But I kept that one to myself.
'Pusssssssssssyyyyyyyy!' She wasn't sparing the feelings, that's for sure, heh.
'Feck.' I chuckled ruefully. I thought Tibby's sides would split.
'Look... If she wants to be with you, she'll come round. If not, there's plenty more lasses out there. Your wife is probably dead. She needs to get over it. Just be yourself. The gifts and stuff isn't you. It's 'you' that she loves... If she loves you.' As always, Kelly was right. To a point at least. I can be bloody romantic when I need to be but it felt like I was pussy footing around. And that isn't me.

'Right! I'm off! I'm going to go up there and kick her back door in and show her the real Raiden!'

And so I did!

We barely touched the cake... It was still there as dawn approached. I grinned to myself as I strapped on my armour, before heading back to Cove. I sneaked into Kelly's place. I could hear her snoring as she slept off last night's booze. A big slice of cake waiting for her on the breakfast table when she woke. Bless her. My best mate in all the world.

WEDNESDAY 26th JUNE.

Last night was perfect. After the bloody bumbling and fumbling of the night before, it was perfect, from beginning to end.

We joined our Yewish allies on an expedition to Ilshenar. Through the hustle and bustle of rallying guardsman, I saw her. I saw her glance over. I saw her look away blushing when I winked. My Aries.

The Beseiger led us through the jungles of Humility and our combined force humbled all that set upon us. Driving wave after wave of increasingly nasty bastards away. Even as I blinked the sweat from my eyes, knee deep in corpses. I saw her. I had her. It's easy to watch someone's back when they are close and it seemed like she was never far from my side.

Finally her minions vanquished, their evil mistress appeared. Tibby suggesting I should seduce her and spare us the fighting. Heh. I'm sure I saw a twinkle in the bitch's eyes, just before we extinguished them forever. She died bloody hard. The men fought hard. Covians and Yewish. Side by side. Helping eachother up. Covering eachother's backs. Hoagie, Tibby, Gimbly and Kobra but feet apart. Aries closer still.

I needed it. I needed the fight. I needed to get the wishy washiness out of my system. The past is passed. I have to live for now and hope that there's a future...

Back in Stonekeep we enjoyed a well deserved drink. I'd got Aries some of the mead she likes. It took a while for her to settle but she was brave enough to sit at my table and then at my side when the bloody drunken Trainee had staggered to put his clothes back on. Heh. He reminded me of young Eason.

My hand rested on her knee, her hand atop mine. No awkwardness, the tension leaving her.  Her miscoloured eyes bright when I caught them in my gaze. Only one moment when they flinched. Nadia aiming a comment about Covians stealing away Waywatchers. Heh. Not any more. It's Ironarms for me. Blonde ones. Well... A particular blonde one, as Aries corrected me later.

Soon the tavern was empty. I must have dozed waiting for Tibby in the latrine. Bugger him. He's big enough and ugly enough to handle himself. I gave him one last shout, then I made my way to Aries.

She was waiting...

Perfect, from begininng to end.

p.s.

Hmmmm... I haven't seen Wilkes for a while. I wonder if he has the hump with me?

MONDAY 2nd JULY.

It's been a while. A fair bit to catch up on...

I won't really do into great depth about all the ribbing I got at the barracks off Sanderson, Hoagie and Pickles for being a sop. I mean... Me? A sop? Really? I wouldn't mind but Aries was bloody there and she was agreeing with them!

The night after, I attended the baths. It was nice to just have an evening off for relaxation. I made sure I was prepared though! I wore some plate chest armour under my robe, just incase Aries decided to bring her bow along. They say lightening nay strikes twice but with that lass, I was taking no chances.

The buffet was a little sparse, well, it was when I'd finished with it. Hoh! Though I did spend most of the evening in the latrine. Not the best of nights, especially as Aries was fending me off in the pool and bloody Mori decided to ONLY wear a lampshade on his head. Nay trunks... Just his silly bloody hat! A bit unfortunate really, as he'd been in the cold bath too.

Last night Sanderson pulled me to one side for a chat. Problems with recruits... a busted hand... Men troubles... Heh. Makes a change her talking to me about her love life. It's usually the other way around!

Sanderson: 'Y'know when you go out for some drinks with someone, you have a lovely night and then they end up being your spoon?'
Raiden: 'Uhmmm, nay. Not really lass.'

Never had a lass just been a spoon after turning on the Raiden charm! Heh... Anyway, turns out this fella was married. His wife pregnant and when Kel' swung for him the smashed her hand up. I strapped it as best I could but I'm no Kobra.

Poor lass... I gave her a big hug. I could tell it was all getting to her. I asked her about Aries. What she thought about her and us and stuff. She said she liked the lass. That'll do for me.

Later tonight, after another bloody argument with the bastards at the bank about releasing my stuff, I headed to Aries place. I helped myself to a few apples from her tree. Our own little orchard... She'd been in Cove. I must have just missed her. Kelly didn't though. She took her along to our place... Well, when I say our place, I mean Kelly's place. Gave her a key too.

What a girl. The pair of them...

WEDNESDAY 4th JULY.

What a bloody night.

A group of bloody pikies trying to pass off a narcotics operation as an 'art' class. Locking the stupid buggers up. Hours of bloody paperwork to cover it all, only to find out that one of our guards must have been on the take and had turned them loose.

Aries being home really was the only good news.

The look on her face though, when I started strapping on my armour to head out and re-apprehend the bloody gypoes... It melted my heart and most of my brains too I reckon. There's only one thing I really want to tell her. Three or four words. But why say that when a bloody epic will do?

I dig such a bloody hole, then extricate myself with daring, cunning wit and irresistible charm! Then dig a bloody bigger one. I try... Too hard maybe... I just want to keep her safe. Let her know I'm not leaving. I don't bloody know...

The things she says... They catch me off guard. They pull at me but when I open my gob, she thinks I'm pushing away. I'm not.

There's more to write but some things are best not dwelt on. Thankfully when we stop bloody talking eachother in circles, we're on the same page...

SUNDAY 8th JULY.

These few days have been perfect. Again.

Even though we get out of step now and again, when we both fall back in line, it's perfect. Like the most impenetrable fortress, the tightest shield wall, like a sword brother having your back and healing your wounds. We just become stronger...

Friday eve, we both dropped a bit of a conflag on eachother... I had orders that would see me leave before first light for a day or so and Aries pulled a bag of jewels from her pack that one of our recruits had gifted to her as a 'gift'.

She seemed troubled... She made me promise not to leave and not to get mad before she produced this 'present'. I didn't have the heart to tease her, given the furrows on her brow. She had nothing to fear. Heh. As if a bag of trinkets would come between us. Or the fact this recruit had drawn them together in a tree some days back too. Seemed all a bit childish to me but I suppose that's elves for you. I just hope he doesn't become too bothersome for her.

I was made to promise that I'd wake her. Upon my return. No matter what the hour. So as I stood there, still road weary, the moonlight pouring across her form, the bed sheet not covering all it should. It was the easiest of promises to keep.

...

A navy!? Boats!? Bloody boats!? And putting ME in charge of them!? If there's one thing I hate more than boats, it's horses, or anyone called Davion. For feck's sake. Who's bright bloody idea was that? Shadwell's, Hoagie's, Keres?

Bloody hell... Hopefully the Baron forgets about that in a hurry. It did seem to get lost amongst the dead man's boots recovery ratios and recruit mortality rates during the officer's meeting.

On a brighter note, plenty of guardsmen at the parade, a few promotions and a good old battle training afterwards by all accounts. I wouldn't know, I was too busy sourcing lumber and rum... Just in case.

TUESDAY 10th JULY.

I think tonight was like the first time Aries and me went on something resembling a date. I mean, other than when she wanted me to see the waterfall but that's best off forgotten.

I was a little late when I got to the Swaggers. I mean, how bloody hard is it to get your own money out of your own bank these days? She'd already ordered some food and was looking a bit miffed at my tardiness. Before I could go over, Esca collared me. Bloody hell. It was nice to share a few words with him that weren't crossed for a change but the lass looked more and more peed off.

I excused myself from Esca and went over. She's ordered for one but enough to eat for two. I was starving. No drink for me either. I got up and went to the bar. Thankfully Sioned wasn't working. I haven't been back in the Swaggers since she told me of her mother's demise and she was quite 'friendly' then... That would be all I needed. Ale in hand and polite, non flirty patter complete, I returned to our table.

She prodded some roast chicken my way with her knife. I knew her mood couldn't last. It wasn't long before that pretty smile graced her lips. There was some garishly clad fella exclaiming to Esca that he 'thought' some 'Covians' were in the tavern. No shit, Pickles was sat at the bar in her cap, kilt and sash. Good thing she had a shirt on too! (Otherwise I may not have stood) I remarked to Aries, just loud enough for the prick to hear, that he should be a Waywatcher, such were his powers of observation.

We heard some commotion outside and the tavern emptied to investigate. A couple of miscreants creating outside. They looked a bit familiar but they seemed harmless enough so our bellies full, the lass and I headed out for home. The weather was turning though, so I suggested we go to Kelly's place, rather than slogging it all the way to Yew.

I showed her around a bit. Trying to usher her past the kitchen and pink rug Kelly insists having by the hearth. I managed to get her out onto the balcony, in the moonlight, all romantic like. I was just about to show her my... Room, when Kelly arrived home. Heh. Endless ribbing ensued. I give up. I retired to my bed, catching them both whispering out of the corner of my eye. A good warrior knows when he's beaten.

Aries followed moments later. 'That' mischievous smile on her lips... We carried on from where we got rudely interrupted.

WEDNESDAY 11th JULY.

The men were putting up a sentry as I strode to the barracks. They looked like a sombre bloody bunch. Aries had that intense look. She was on her guard. A cry of anguish echoed from the cells. That would be why...

Three churchmen appeared, Hugo at the forefront. Ni'harel, beaten and bloodied, tossed to the ground like a ragdoll as they chastised all who would listen before going on their way. Bastards...

All the Drow's pandering to the church didn't spare her from the Templar's attentions. But still, she's a Covian guardsmen, one of my own. I had Kobra look her over and take her up to the infirmary whilst the rest of us stood guard.

One of the churchmen returned. Brazen bugger, I'll give him that. I approached him and demanded an explanation but all he did was talk in bloody riddles. Never a straight answer. Never an answer at all. Just replied to my questions with questions of his own. I sent him packing. I needed a drink. The Templar's brutality left a sour taste in my mouth.

Aries and I headed to the Goblin whilst the men dismantled the guardpost. She still had that look. I think she was worried that I'd challenged the churchmen but they are my men, I can't stand idly by and stomach their mistreatment without knowing the cause. She told me that the Drow are a proud race. That each one is 'perfect' Ni'harel had a cut from her scalp to her jaw. Not so perfect anymore.

Kobra and Pickles joined us. I told them to watch out for themselves and to watch out for the men. Keep them in line. Keep them in good order. If the church is scrutinizing the army, I want our lads on their toes and not on a bloody pyre. Or maybe the Templars were singling out the Drowling. If so, our elves and arcanists won't be far behind.

My mood darker and darker, Aries and I took our leave. We made our way to Kelly's. Only her embrace able to raise my spirits.

MONDAY 16th JULY.

My bloody head is pounding!

And it's nay just the wine giving me a headache! Zealous bloody churchies. Lovelorn bloody recruits. Devious bloody elves. And every lass in the bloody land stopping me to say hello. And that's before I mention my duties!

Kobra did damn well last night. A large force under his command and certainly a more challenging mission than Facey's the other night. Looks like another one destined for the Baron's Own. It's good to see the squads breathing fresh life into their lungs. Grenadiers, Scouts and Arcanists abound! I just hope the Baron isn't serious about me resurrecting the navy...

Long live the Alliance!

It's grand to see so many Recruits and Watchmen coming through too. I just wish they'd all bugger off with their making puppy eyes at Aries. And that bloody elf! I told her to watch out for him. Gave her yet more precious stones and then sent her on a wild goose chase to the church when I was waiting for her in the tavern. A few minutes later and she'd have missed me altogether. I think she's getting wise to him though. I just hope he's not being troublesome for the her. I know all the attention grates on her. Still, she did offer to buy me something nice with all the gems Saer' had given her. I told her, all I wanted was her. That went down well I think. I need to keep an eye on him for sure. He seems like a devious little bastard. I think Aries is beginning to realise that.

Just as we did finally get some time alone, we had bloody Gar' banging at the door. Apologizing. Insulting the feral lass. Apologizing some more. Re-insulting the feral lass... Declaring his undying love for Aries. Apologizing. Insulting the feral lass. He was lucky to leave with his face intact.

What the bloody hell is it with them all? I mean, I don't blame all these fellas for doting over Aries. She does have an amazing arse personality! I just feel for her having to  deal with all the unwanted attention the moment she sets foot in Cove.

In other news, the reply I got from the churchie was a little short. I was hoping for more bedtime stories. I reckon he's not into foreplay. Another devious bugger to look out for it seems...

WEDNESDAY 18th JULY.

The men did well the other night, during Kelly's mission to Shame. A good bunch of Recruits and Watchman coming through. If they last long enough to make Junior, then the army will be well on it's way to former glories. As long as the bloody church keeps their claws off of them.

Some commotion at the barracks when we got back. A lot of common folk milling around. One of them caused a cafuffle and tried to loot my winnings for being first guardsman back to the barracks. Bastard. He was soon on his arse and a few kicks in the ribs later, the gold was back in my purse.

Aries and I managed to get some time alone together, finally. Perhaps the good luck coins Kel' gave us work after all? She makes herself so small, so defenceless in my arms. She spoke more last night about her feelings than in all the time we've spent together. Now and afore.

Is that what triggered the nightmare I wonder...

Saddle weary and caked in dust I climb down from my mount... The smouldering ashes of my estate in view. I left to protect them. They were in harms way every day I was Commander. I banished myself for their benefit. That's what I told myself. That's what kept me going all those years in the colonies. When all I really did was sign their death warrants with my departure.

If I didn't have the lass, I don't know what I'd do...

SATURDAY 21st JULY - PART ONE.

Another goodbye...

Aries will live! Tripps quick thinking almost certainly saved her life. I was stunned. Rooted to the bloody spot. It was like I was looking down on myself mon, watching, as everything unfolded. Aries' blood on the sandstone paving, she was pale, literally turning green as the Besieger forced potions down her neck. Only his stern words cut through the fog that had enveloped me.

I thought I would lose her, matey.

Skip forward a day and I'm sat on a beach talking to you, ten years after yer died. Heh... Ye bastard! Leavin' me and Kelly behind like yer did.

Goodbye once more bruddah.

SATURDAY 21st JULY - PART TWO.

The evening started off calmly enough. Actually, calmer than I thought it would, seeing as I was giving Mischief her marching orders.

She's always had her own agenda and from what I had heard, she was not being too discreet or too smart about pushing it. Not what I needed to come back to me or the men, especially as it's none of my bloody business anyway. All I wanted was for her to keep her ear to the ground and find some dirt on the Initiate. Seems all she had for me, apart from antagonizing the bugger further, was that he's friendly with a recruit, Garshinkle and that Garshinkle feels he owes the churchman 'favours'.

Whether there's more to that arrangement than meets the eyes remains to be seen but I want as much distance between the army and Mischief as possible. Seems to me that they way she's going about things, the church will end up not only persecuting elves and arcanists but females and the army at large too, if it's implicated in her none too clandestine dealings.

I need to keep an eye on her, for the men's sake.

Anyway, that deed done, I made my way to Trinsic. I reckon I owe Wilkes and Tripps a drink apiece and the lass a nice eve of browsing the market and maybe picking up a trinket or two!

SATURDAY 21st JULY - PART THREE.

It all happened so fast, though my feet felt like they were in mud. Vision foggy. Senses dulled...

The market was just beginning to bustle. I'd had a passing glance at Aries. A smile and wink. I wanted to give her some space. I feel at times I maybe smother her. I saw her talking to Saer' but it didn't matter to me a jot.

I was enjoying the crack with Wilkes and Tripps when it happened. They were off, as if loosed from a bow! Wilkes after the assailant, Tripps to the aid of the assailed. Aries... My back was to the fray, I turned and went to run but my legs would not carry me. I went to speak, but I don't know if words were formed. Tripps saved her life and I stood there gawping like a fool.

The Besieger's words cut through the haze. His quick actions bringing her back from the brink, I had her in my arms, clinging to me, clinging to life as I was escorted to the gate and back to Cove.

Take her to Cove, she'll be safe there. Tripps words ringing in my ears, as I barged into Kelly's place. Sheriham posted sentry on the step, I laid Aries down. So helpless again as she wretched. Good only for holding the vase into which she vomited.

I made her drink, I made her throw her guts up, I changed her dressings and cleaned her wounds. I asked her to stay. Taunted her into standing by my side, in spite of it all.

Tripps returned. Nadia the culprit, arrested and locked up in Yew. I offered him my thanks and my hand.
'Nay offence Raiden but I didn't do it for you.'
'Aye... But ye still have my gratitude Tripps.'
The lass is lucky to have him with her in Yew and the new friends she's made here in Cove.

Two bloody guards from the Trinsic Watch came to gawk! I had a good mind to give them a proper dressing down but the lass chastised me between bouts or nausea and pain. Kelly was next, smashed me in the face and then brought Pickles in to try and draw the poison out of the lass's system.

Word was that a Waywatcher was outside. If one was visible, there'd be two or three in the shadows. Come to finish their Corporal's crime? I wasn't taking the chance. I had Pickles open a Portal and I carried Aries home.

TUESDAY 31st JULY.

My first day off in a while and a lot to catch up on here. Patrols, sentries, expeditions... Even a spot of cleaning but the main news is the trial is over, thank feck.

Afore I get onto that though, we meted out some justice of our own at Sunday's parade. A Watchman was punished for dereliction of duty, stripped of rank and privileges, lashed and locked in the cells. Young Eason and Kobra also get their just deserts, the former earning promotion and the latter receiving the Covian Seal.

Whilst we saw justice served in Yew, in terms of Smith being found guilty, our Watchmen got harsher treatment for disobeying orders, than she did for attempted murder. What's the world coming to? Are our allies becoming soft?

The whole damn trial was a sham... Well, what I mean is the defence was a sham-bles and the punishment was a sham. Aries was attacked in Trinsic, whilst their Watch did nothing, one of said Watch then represented the defendant and now Smith gets to live out her days there, instead of swinging from a tree. Heh. Stinks to me. But all that matters is Aries.

The churchies want us married. To solidify the Northern/Avatarian Alliance maybe. We have six weeks to see it done and for me to prove Railen's death. How the feck can I 'PROVE' it. In my heart I know she's gone. All my own enquiries tell me that she's gone. But how do I prove it?

Just when I thought I could put all this behind me and concentrate on the lass and soldiering once more, I get smacked in the chops with that one... Oh... And Kelly wants to be Best 'Man'... Hoagie brought me no luck the last two times, so maybe she'll get the job...

Ugghhh...

TUESDAY 7th AUGUST.

The lass has only been gone a few days, yet her absence weighs heavily upon me.

She left after the funeral on Sunday. Promised her mission was safe enough. Not sure how much I believed her but I know better than to try and keep her from her duty in the Militia.

I don't know why but I found myself compelled to stand and speak about Garshinkle. It just felt like the right thing to do. Hopefully I didn't make too much of a fool of myself.

I threw myself into duty last night, Sanderson and me, paintin' Sosaria shadow and tan with recruitment leaflets. Asked her to be 'Best Man' and then we headed to the Goblin to get pissed. I was just beginning to regret my decision, when we were called into a meeting as Veseper came calling.

Don't remember much of that though...

I miss Aries. Friday can't come too soon.

FRIDAY 7th SEPTEMBER.

They say a picture paints a thousand words... Or summat... Let's hope so, otherwise this would be a bloody long diary entry...

FRIDAY 14th September.

What a night...

Helped stave off undead attacks in the Altmere and Covetowne. The lads did well, we took no losses, discipline in combat was good, the buggers even stood by me when I got bogged down in mud. All except Ting, or whatever she goes by now... Apparently she ignored our plight, during one of the many undead assaults, though I was too busy trying to get out of the mud to notice.

No sooner had she become a trusted guardswoman again, she was stripped of her rank for yet another dereliction of duty. And guess who got to do the honours...

Speaking of honours... It was my honour to be finally wed to Harper this eve. Just a small simple ceremony. We wanted no pomp or attention... Or crowds that could hide would be assassins. Just a churchie, Hoagie, Kelly and Sheri, Aries' maid of honour.

Everyone takes the piss but we couldn't be happier. She looked so gorgeous and we make eachother so happy, what more could we want?

Monday 1st October.

It was grand to see that the lass gets as much stick off her lot as I do of ours, when I visited our allies in Yew the other week. She had them busying around setting up their famous road blocks when I arrived and after one of the cheeky buggers taxed me, the assorted Footies and Trainees started ribbing her. Hoh. Makes a bloody change.

Grand to see Melior-Martin-Pickles-Whatever leading out so many patrols too. I think she's almost catching up to my trophy count now. Then again, I have taken TEN years off from collecting them! Hoh!

A lot of increased deadite activity recently. I led a joint patrol this eve to the graveyard and only our numbers and expert training carried the day against the skeletal onslaught. Another fine Covian victory!

Wednesday 30th January.

I haven't written for a while, I haven't had much to say... Young Eason's death really got to me.

Of all the lost comrades and friends down the years, his loss seemed the most pointless. The lad lit up the place, his passion and loyalty and enthusiasm rubbed off on us all and alas, Gregor's health has taken a turn for the worse since the boy has been gone. In truth, it's only the love of Aries that has kept me from an even deeper melancholy.

Our ranks dwindle, whilst the orcish warbands swell. The Militia and Vesperians barely venture from their borders. The weather is bleak, times are hard. The baron and his staff have retreated once more to the colonies and again, I'm left to question my duty and my place within it all.

I've missed out on a lot in life and I never regretted it. Never regretted being a soldier and serving Cove but I don't want to miss out on making memories with the lass... Before it's too late. There's plenty of life left in the old dog yet but the dog is indeed getting old.

I think it's time to retire. To live out the rest of my life without grime and blood and gristle on my hands.

I hope my fellows will forgive me.
