I think Cove should have some kind of Police Squad. Like made to do just police work. And have their own kind of ranking system...like Detectives and Deputies and Inspectors and Sherrif, Chief, and whatnot. I think that would be really cool.

Tried, lack of interest, failed.

Though i think the one of the reasons it failed was because it had nothing to opose it.

The problem in my opinion was the lack of a persistent citizen element. Without a persistent citizen element it quickly turns into: turn criminal-mode on, fight guards, end 'criminal-rp'.

I have much more faith in a sort of VTCish citizen element with a criminal undertang. If you can get a few civvies lounging about at normal playing hours then it starts to get interesting.

there already is some criminal acts that go about. some made by guardsman themselves. so if promoted right a cop idea could work. cuz where there's law, there is law breakers. even if the cops were there just to remove soldiers wasted from bars and whatnot. or to investigate murders. RP murders could even work if done right. just to add fun to the RP community. just a thought

but the main reason i thought of it is that the police would actually interact with other towns more than the soldiers. due to investigations and such. seizing items and all that

lol john....i think i know who's a criminal....well if the Baron goes with it then yea i'll let u know...but right now its just an idea that is bugging me....u can go ahead and make a criminal char....drug dealer...murderer....that kinda stuff....maybe if we had some criminal acts going on Octi will go with the cop idea...go to other towns...ask ppl to play along with a murder...then we can get investigators...inspectors...detectives...undercover cops....that kinda stuff....hehe...in theory it sounds fun

Overall the idea is great, but the main problem is still we don't have enough active civilians, but - to my great happiness - during past 3 - 4 months the civ activity raised noticeably! Maybe someday, someday...

Yeah it is an interesting concept and as Tom said the "criminal" element has been tried a few times before with no great success.

A criminal element doesn't have to be purely citizen based as there are dodgey people in all walks of life so corrupt guardsmen would of course be an option.

But we do have more civvies now (although many are alts) there is more scope. For instance my civvie Amon's bio hints at a past laced with gambling and dealing in stolen goods etc. ;)

As for a "police squad" I dunno...

In my opinion the guardsmen police Cove and with the Grenadiers being the Baron's bodyguard/guardians perhaps they would be entrusted with any police duties

or

maybe the Baron/Commander/Captain would assign a guardsman to investigate a crime and he/she in turn could form a squad of a few more guardsmen to investigate

or

perhaps it would fall into the church's jurisdiction?

We recently had a small scenario with Jonas Fleming??? Where we tried, hung and then burned him (we don't do things by half in Cove ;)).

I wasn't around when any alleged murders took place but i was there for the burning :D and although it was kinda off the cuff it was fun and i think the participants enjoyed it.

Sooo... Sorry to babble on - I think some small criminal plotlines/scenarios could work and if they are a success maybe a criminal element could grow and become sustainable?

As for a dedicated police squad... Personally I'm not so sure. Leave it to the guardsmen I say.

Yeah, especially Jonas  ;D

Returning to crimes - someone could lead and RP a group of folks that will sell contraband like magical stuff etc... Very profitable business, enough to bribe this or that guard ;)

The guardsmen are the Cops basically. But yea, Raidens right criminal scenario's work better than actual elements.

While it is indeed an interesting idea, the overall problem is lack of man power. Essentially there are a lot of interesting squad ideas we could put into action, but we'll need more members to make them work. So in short, if you get out and get recruiting this idea could well become possible. ;)

Actually, for most things, it is. New ideas take man power to fill them out, and if you have a better idea, then I'm sure we'd all be happy to hear your pearl of wisdom. ;)

Another option is getting paid 10K a month to do nothing but play UO....That would create the necessary activity as well :)

If all you lowlives would stop wasting time in other guilds..*points* you know who I'm talking to! That would help.....Plus recruiting ...And before you know it we'd have 50 Squads and a true village to RP in!

My idea was serious! Why not put give several citizens and soldiers a secret police role? Perhaps even work with the inquisition as well! It could be charged with finding heretics, spies AND law-breakers.

For the Secret Police thing.

I like the idea of the Detective/Investigator. I think the ball would very much be in your court. Its a position that couldn't just be there for koolness, but would have to be able to generate activity on a regular basis.

This was a small plot I organised donks ago. I was hoping for it be receive more attention, but sadly.. it was a "planned" spontaneous event, so a lot of people left without really knowing what they were missing out on :D

With Murders happening all the time, however.. the element of realism would fade a bit.. who cares if its entertainment. Its like Burke's Law, or Diagnosis Murder! All those damn murders every week in the same Hospital ;o

 And there is a lot of cime going on, lil'alure keeps raiding Cove with his drow friends, i keep stealing stuff. I just someone started a mugger, Cove could have had thier own band of bandits...or eaven orcs! 3 people could go around i orcishkind marsks, and raid our hunts to the orc fort and covetsious and places around Cove! Eavn if you got bored mugging Covians, you could go over to trinny or GRD, and mugg someone there. If your lucky, mabe you can kidnap a noble and get a randsom! Why not?

Sounds good. I think command should take into account the fact that, although Octi's point was relative about man power, if we create the squad, it's likely to draw MORE people into the guild.

Perhaps a position should be created in the Baronship Household or Council.

Steward or Bailiff or Sheriff etc.?

Something for our civvies to aspire to?

I think we should make it like the old Lesley Neilson show, Police Squad.
The members of police squad could bumble around, cracking rubbish, but oh so funny jokes and solving crimes by accident

Well, I think that it'd be better to have police that doesn't follow the rule of "Shoot first, ask later" like the church does...
IMO the police squads - if they'll exist at all - shouldn't be connected with the church...

i love the idea for inspector/investigator....and for people to create environments to work that character in such as a murder plot. that would be great fun. he can go around the towns questioning people and such. it would even more fun if the murder took place during a multi-town event. have a team of investigators and such to work down the case. also gives them something to do to pass time. go through evidence and what not. if this is even on the border of happening let me know. i would gladly make an investigator for it. i got plenty of slots..i can even make a criminal.

Still, having detectives or investigators in Cove will require someone of the Command perhaps (or some other creative person) to set up a quest for each event - i.e. murder. You have to prepare victim, maybe some evidence, ask few people to tell things that will move the investigation further, when one of the policemen will be asking around... etc etc etc...

It's a damn detailed task to do sth like that...

Sure, if people were as scared of the church as they were.. say six months ago.  Now the church is more or less done-with, I just recently started a character and I hardly get any respect, I remember when I joined guardsman would quiver at the sight of a churchie.
