Title: Yeller - stop using it or face harrassment charges
Post by: Moraine DiGoraz on February 21, 2007, 05:37:09 pm
Yeah, seeing as the old thread got deleted and I can't be bothered to type it all out again :
Yeller can be taken (and has been taken) as racist and hurtful. Stop using that expression.

This relates to Oriental characters, or at least characters with "yellow skin".

"Yellow skinned bastard", "Tokunian nitwitt" or "Narrow eyed fool" are not a problem as in this case the person's appearance is an adjective and not an insult.

'Yeller' is the same as calling someone a 'Yellow skinned bastard'. But I see the point it is racist.

It's meant to 'define' the race....Nothing wrong with it and especially not in a roleplay environment. I had at one time an Asian girlfriend, so I'm arguably a racist fuming against asians. My character Erik however, doesn't like Tokunese people. People shouldn't be so jumpy about something virtual. If Erik is called a bastard and a sheepshagger by Yewlings I don't go throwing a hissyfit either.

It's the equivalent of saying someone is.....black

It carries no negative derogatory connotation as some other slang words I will not post

Does blacker sound bad? Same is done like with the word yellow (yeller)
I don't think it's wrong to say in character. Out of character is another thing

To be honest guys this thread is a potential time bomb waiting to go off.

In fairness if you think that some people may be offended by the phrase then dont even bother using it. It simply is not worth it risking pissing people off over a word very easily be replaced with something else.

Thread Locked.
