Title: UOKR Picture and general discussion

What you think about KR goes here, to keep the other thread free and easy to look at.

I'm not overly impressed I'll be honest. I think some of the item graphics could really use the work and playing KR just seems strange.
I've been playing 2d for over five years though but it doesn't have the same UO feeling for me, its swaying more towards WoW or something.

(...) its swaying more towards WoW or something.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they prepared KR to secure UO's position among other MMOs with uber-turbo-super-charged graphics?

It get's less and less like Ultima every time they do something. They should start dismantling :P

If they remove 2D I'm not sure what I would do. Probably quit

Im sure UO:KR looks nice for those that dont have 9 year old roots stuck in 2d.
Ive tried KR and its just not UO for me. If EA quit the 2d client...I will most likely go down with it.

Now I am aware that what ive tried is the Beta client, but UO for me...is the old 2d client.

I managed to download it in 1hr30 mins, had a quick bash about.  I think alot of the graphics are a great improvement especially moving water and some animals.  There's a lot of work needing to be done with the interface, I couldn't manage to get my paperdoll to reopen after closing it, using the right click on my status bar didn't work.  Some of the option menu was hard to read and had graphic errors.
I like the hotbar makes doing things alot simplar once I worked out how to put spells and skills onto it.
I'll see how the improvements go and I hope they sort out the windowed play so its not so small.

Chatbox is too big, fitting too little text (4 lines for something that big?! What?!)

Macros are fiddly and don't work correctly (Arm/Disarm for instance - And how the hell do we
make macros for like.. Open Door, All Names?)

Paperdoll image stretches or doubles up depending on what you're arming!

No idea what certain keys are, such as zoom function.

No idea how to make bags like they were, or assign a bag as a disarm/undress bag!

UO assist isnt yet working with UOKR.

Hey Guys is there any way to disable the sucky targeting system in KR?

I don't think you need UO assist to KR as you got hot keys now. Besides, it's a bad bad programme.

As an old member, remembering the moonstones and the power of ID-Staffs, i must say, that the 2d is the thing that makes UO special, in times like these..

Title: Re: UOKR Picture and general discussion
Post by: Marcus Kobra on June 02, 2007, 06:48:08 am
HEHE back when items had charge and before "slayer" anything?

I do say that corsper looks alot as I'de imagined it... but I didnt need this darker (litterally, these colors are dark and drab, i think "Gothic" is the term for it) depiction to implant that in my mind. I dunno If i'm going to like this (maybe someday EA will publish a Rebuilt 2D ?? *crosses fingers at the unlileyness)

Title: Re: UOKR Picture and general discussion
Post by: Khaelieth on June 02, 2007, 09:36:09 am
I still love 2D. And I wish they gave us our moonstones back! And when they were at it, ID-staffs, less item loot, make slayers rare again and such. And dismantle the whole Roman Empire in two days.

Title: Re: UOKR Picture and general discussion
Post by: Moraine DiGoraz on June 02, 2007, 09:45:22 am
They should also remove the Private option from homes. I have NO idea which complete fucking moron said yes to that idea but I wish he dies a painful death!

They fixed armslore, for which I am thankful, hopefully next they'll fix itemID.
A cool idea for that would be that if you are assigned loot (i.e. your end of the loot is spawned on a monster it makes calculations, such as luck, now add itemID too) you get +1% intensity on all properties for each 10 points in itemID, not taking items over the cap ofcourse.

What I I do like about KR though is that it looks alot like WoW.
Personally I hate that, but it does mean that more kiddies will actually give UO a try instead of discarding it right away because it has outdated graphics.
More people means more populated shards means more recruits means more people for me to have assassinated! Yay!

Sod that! It'll take forever to make macros in KR - Especially because they're not globally applicable to your account.

Soon you can change that option Jack.

UO:KR looks terrible and needs alot more work, its as if someone in EA said... hey mystic guys... uo looks outdated get it 3D now! So they rushed to get it done.

I've read some posts on stractics where people have recreated scenes in hi-res 2d images and it looks amazing. They should have made UO:KR look as good as Titan quest and other RECENT games on the market, it looks outdated even before its out. I can't see it improving sales really.

Title: Re: UOKR Picture and general discussion

I think they should have just updated the 2d client. IMHO 2d is completely capable of looking just as good, if not better, than any "3d" system. My computer runs this game (diablo 2) like a dream but KR even on the lowest setting lags like hell and is totally unplayable. I do realize that its still in beta... but considering EA's past with UO, how much better can we really expect it to get? I mean don't get me wrong, KR does look great. I just have my doubts about how well the final version will work.

The control system for the 2d client seems totally natural to me, and I've only had my account for 20 months. Everything just feels right! With KR things are... well... clunky right now. Its hard to sort out where options and buttons are etc. etc. Not to mention my screen feels naked without the black band around the play area where I can put my open bags, paperdoll, and all that other wonderful window clutter.

If things don't improve a significant amount, I'm definitely going to stick with the 2d client. God forbid they ever take the 2d client out back and plug it one in the brain-pan, I don't know what I'd do then. I guess it depends on how bad the UO withdrawals are. Perhaps I may actually stoop to using an inferior client...

Aye, both Diablo graphics were (are) great.
Also anyone remembers Fallout series? Pure isometrical 2d - looked totally great.
So aye, it is possible to have a 2d engine looking beautifully.

The tavern on your screen looks awesome.

I completely agree with Perrin's post. The KR interface is far from intuitive - they even disabled some default (and so natural) hotkeys and other shizz which is used in 2D client.

If they'd remove the blur from the graphics, work on the KR client stability and hardware requirements (life shows that it's much of a matter of code optimisation) and other small quirks - then it might be successful.
Right now I don't see any bright future for it.

DEV Team Put out in the press releases that the 2D client will be nixed eventually. I have to say on reflection this new client looks abit like the Icewind Dale games from Wizards of The Coast. But even they, OLDER games by many years even... have a better look. I'm not licking that people are having nothing but negative feed back on the interface. Supposedly there is also to be a "original" set of options for the interface... apparently its not yet in the beta. Must say I'm glad I can;t play right now lol!! The disappointmeant would be excruciating!!

Post by: qom_riyadh on June 20, 2007, 12:05:05 pm
On the other hand, I think that the release of KR will render apps like EasyUO or UOAssist unusable.
Why?

Because KR is so slow, that in the time which is needed to move from one tile to another, you will be able to open your backpack, five pouches, apply bandadges to you, three of your companions, drink several potions, craft a chair and a halberd. Meanwhile your tea is ready and requested map of your location just finishes loading on UO Stratics atlas.

Icewind Dale never did live up to much after I'd played Baldur's Gate 2. That was probably the best game Black Isle produced; except possibly Fallout 2. I miss that studio.

This is all relevant to KR because.. Well, make your own links. ;)

The difference between all those games and UO is the diversity and the interaction with a gazillion objects in UO. You can place and build a gazillion things in UO, making it infinitely more complicated then just a background mapping like on the old '2D games'.

That being said I don't think the client is that bad. Other then the fact a 2D/Minor3D world shouldn't be such a hog for power. My only complaint is that the machine required to run it is too high. Perhaps not too high but too high for most laptops, which is what I use.

90% of the other complaints can be categorised as: people are creatures of habit and don't like any change

Well, I think it's awful. It's 3D all over again; ugly sprites, can't distinguish between mount and rider, can't distinguish armor and clothing on character sprites, messy graphics... eugh, terrible.

uTorrent is by far the best. Good speeds, small application, and doesn't hog all your resources while it's running.

Right.

*Raises his shield.*

I like KR. It's getting better and better with every patch, and is only missing a few things that could make it perfectly playable for me. Though I agree it doesn't have quite the same feel as the 2D client, it IS something I can get used to, and to be honest, some parts are giving me the same feeling that discovering Britannia did a little under three years ago.

If we can look past the current bugs, it's actually quite good...and too boot it runs smoother on my PC than 2D ever did.

Title: Re: UOKR Picture and general discussion
Post by: Kas Valentine on June 26, 2007, 04:41:08 pm
Sorry to reply to myself here but I decided after posting the previous message that I should really patch KR up instead of just assuming it was still rubbish. Well I logged in after the patches (and christ were they big) and noticed a lot of cleaning up to the menus so that you can actually see what you're doing and what not. They also cleaned up a lot of the UI issues I'd been having before like windows not staying where you put them and user options not remembering the changes you make.

So far however these were the only things that cheered me up. I walked around my house after changing characters and it still looks absolutely dreadful. The items that I adore the look of in 2D just look oversized and ugly. Of course items don't make the game but that doesn't mean they should just look like crap.

I decided to recall to Cove to do an escort as a test of how things are working out with actual actions. I found the whole encounter to be really clumsy when compared to doing the same thing in 2D. I had to look through all my runebooks to find the right one (backpack constantly rearranged by KR), click the location I wanted and then click recall using spell. All the things I can do so quickly in 2D have just been made more faffy and in general I just don't see why we need a WoW style UI (from my perspective it certainly doesn't make things easier).

I got my noble to his destination at Britain bank but the place just looked as terrible as it did when I first ventured into the KR client. I noticed the hiryu graphic was a little better, actually quite a nice graphic, pity everything surrounding it was vomit !

But hey don't bite my head off please, this is just my opinion, I gave KR a chance after giving it a ribbing and it just let me down again. I'll keep giving it chances when they implement more patches and I'd love to think it will get to a point where I can say....

"Wow, I love KR, I'm happy playing this and leaving 2D behind"

....but at the moment that just isn't remotely likely. :-[

Again I reiterate: Convert or Die.   2D will be nixed, its a matter of time before you turn to the dark side of KR or simply move on and leave the BOC as it only exists in UO behind... and that's  gonna be a sad day when some of us have to walk away because we arn't willing to pay the cash for a game that no longer appeals. Hell people the game already doesn't appeal to most if us, at least not in its mechanics. Thats why we RP!! KR will not affect RP so I say we all just choke back our vomit and carry on.  I'll see you all in game when I see you... just gotta get my new desktop up and running.  and that will be about 5 months from now -_-

S'right, I do roleplay because I prefer not to engage myself in modern UO, but for the game to look terrible as well as have terrible content is too much to contemplate. I'm not sure what people will do if KR actually does become the only client but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I respect where yer coming from Marcus but for them to close 2D as things stand now would just be crackers. :-\

The only thing that does annoy be about the whole business is the sheer volume of people that are claiming they either can't see a problem with KR or they're embracing it as the future of UO (regardless of whether it's good or bad). This is precisely why UO is in the state it is now, people just let the changes come in on the basis that "they'll probably get better" or "they'll get fixed later" and they never do.

It's as though half the people on UHall are wearing blinkers are something. I'd say they're blind but then at least then there would be a reason for all the poor content. This isn't aimed at you Marcus or anyone else in this thread I've just always had a problem with how things proceed in UO.

Whether you voice a negative opinion or a positive one everything just carries on regardless and you have absolutely no way to prevent it (either as an individual or as a group). Aiiiieeee, to feel powerless sucks, especially when it's something you love so much.

I completely agree with you Kas. And I think there are a lot of others who hate KR too; enough to quit UO as soon as they nix the 2D client. I'm hoping it's enough people to make EA think twice about getting rid of it.

I wouldn't mind KR and would actually like it if it wasn't so hideously ugly and done half-arsed. Maybe in a year or so it'll be good, but right now, it's a mess. And anyone who claims to like it must be blinkered.

I doubt they would care, like they cared when they placed trammel; they lost many but gained more due to it becoming fluffy friendly. And I'm pretty sure their aim is to gain more people to play UO, and I think they will compared to what they will lose.

UO peeked at nearly 400 thousand subscriptions across what i think is 26 shards I may be wrong on the number of shards. UO current subscription doesnt make better than 150K you would think theyd be totally GUNG-ho on making everything perfect and have just one release and voila!! This is a Beta So......

Any REALLY OLD FOGES from back when UO:BETA came out?? you know the origionally felly only hey look its LB talking to people and the one guy who flame striked him ?? funny story but anyway anyone that old? had a beta then and can compare the two from recolection??

Aye that's the annoying thing really Jack, whether we like KR or not the company in charge (EA Mythic now right?) just goes ahead with it anyway. The only exceptions we've had to this rule were UO2 and UXO which were proper sequels but got dropped before they were released. Having said that UO2 was the only one that looked promising, UXO just looked like a WoW clone, but I still think a proper sequel is the way to go.

I wish I could say I've been around since the original beta but I've only been here since August '99. The tales from the beginning of UO are really inspiring, if only I'd discovered the game earlier I know I would have had a much richer experience. However if you look at the selection of screenshots here (http://www.markeedragon.com/screenshots/showgallery.php/cat/512) you can see how similar the graphics in the beta were to the 2D client that went live (more or less the same client as we have now).

This is the worrying thing, if 2D didn't change a whole lot from beta to live, why will KR? :o

Actually, I remember seeing screenshots from the ORIGINAL original start of the Beta, where all the gumps looked rubbish, sprites and avatars looked chunky and crap, so they probably updated the original UO Beta as they went along, much as they're doing now.

There's plenty of opportunity for them to improve. I've made my own recommendations and feedback, so as long as its constructive, its the best way to do it.

Title: Re: UOKR Picture and general discussion

Ah well if you go to the index (http://www.markeedragon.com/screenshots/showgallery.php/cat/552) of that forum you can see the original promotion screenshots as well as a collection from the alpha of UO. But I agree if they receive and act on enough constructive criticism the new client could end up being worthwhile. As I said a few messages up I would love to be a massive KR fanboy but what with the state of the client at the moment and EA's history with customer feedback I just can't see that coming true. :)

Don't forget the rose-tinted glasses effect. I know that while having PVPs running around all over did create a sense of danger, it was definately very, very irritating as much of the time.

Oh certainly, Felucca was still the only facet in 1999 and I frequently got my face skinned off while out hunting in Britain forests. But you got to a point when you knew what the horse galloping noise or the daemon name appearing at the bottom of the screen meant and bust out your recall macro lickety split (pop pouches for paralyse, yay).

I genuinely adored those times ! ;D

However this was mostly because I liked writing about my adventures (so the more drama the better) or stealing on my thief. S'funny, KR is so far away from back then and part of my absolute devotion to 2D is doubtless a throwback to "the good old days" but nevertheless I still think we deserve better.

Or as a friend of mine did, he started playing, got to some bridge in Britain, saw some red names, lost con, checked the manual to find out why their names were red and realised his predicament ^^

Grow up folks. You can't expect something that was almost ten years ago to still be the same today. Not in the computer world.

Besides, I think KR has a great deal of potential, should they be able to squash the bugs out of it.

Sadly, EA is in charge, which doesn't bode well at all, since they're after the money, not the pleasure.

It needs a lot more than ironing out of some bugs. The thing is clearly only half-finished and needs a lot more work to even be passable; let alone compete with the 2D client.

The thing people have to bear in mind is that it IS half finished, no one's claiming otherwise. It's a Beta, what do you expect?

I've just got a new computer and have been trying out KR.  It performs well on my new system though I cant really judge it until I've set up my macros etc and done some combat.

I'm not sure how it will work out pvp-wise.  It's kinda clunky for a mage, if you select yourself or a target all spells automatically gfo for the target rather than give you a target reticle.  I prefer the 2D way of casting a spell and using target-self and last-target.  Hopefully this can still be done in KR.

Recent patches have given KR some 2D features i.e you can now have the old style inventory though it can be resized I believe.  Also there is a legacy chat option i.e you can type without having to hit enter first now.

It can be done in KR. Right click the icon on the hotbar, and you can choose between reticle, last target, etc.

They did do that, but it's not been public beta for some time. They did admit it still needs a lot of work, but I think publicly "unreleasing" a game would be the last thing they'd want to do. :P

I also said:

Not simply, "Achh, get a few more bugs ironed out and it'll be great." However, given some more months, stuff will be ironed out - not that it makes KR satisfactory.

I don't think it's still in Beta. Didn't they declare it gold and are having all new players download it instead of the 2D? I know I've recruited a couple who didn't even know there was a 2D client.

Even if it is beta, it's still far too unfinished to even be called that in my opinion.

KR went gold end of June, and has had a couple of major patches since.  This took many people by surprise (even the fanbois) who kept saying things like "but its just beta", "what do you expect from beta testing", "when its launched it will be better than 2D".

I really had high hopes for KR myself.  I'm very disappointed with it.  If I released software that full of bugs at work I would be fired.  What worries me most is people who are trying UO out for the first time are trying to play the game with KR.  Its not a good advertisement for the UO universe, and I think it will put many newcomers right off, and chase them away to an unealthy, addictive grinding MMO.

I really didn't realise it wasn't in Beta anymore. In that case, I am a lot more disappointed with how it looks. But I still stand by the fact that some of the 2D client looked awful in the beginning. Not THAT awful, I agree, but they do have a hard task; it's not as simple as creating a new game, like UO first was, but translating a decade-old game that people know back to front and love dearly.

Exactly chief, s'what I told UHall almost word for word. They should just bite the bullet and make a new game, instead of having all this silly faff-on. Of course that would cause problems in regard to the knowing the game back to front and loving it dearly aspects...

"Should I risk moving to a new game, I'm settled here, etc etc"

But frankly I reckon making a new game is far easier than the task on their hands at the moment, especially given how much money the devils are making (The Sims 2 Overseas War for Oil Expansion is selling really well).
