Welcome to Cove

As other squads have their own unique shield as part of their uniform, and the Navy as of yet does not, I thought I'd like to see what shield members prefer.

By no means will the shield which proves to be most popular be implemented into the Navy's official uniform - though of course, it could be! - I merely wanted to see which of these options I've given members like the most.

In order from left to right, there is the Tear Kite shield, the Kite shield, the Order shield and the Bronze shield. I've left out the Chaos, Heater, Buckler and Metal shields as they are all already in use by other squads / army entities.

The options are as follows:


Personally I'm in favour of the Tear Kite shield, followed by the Order shield. Whether or not to include the Order shield was debatable, as it's a sign of loyalty to Lord British which Cove is decidedly not. However, the serpent could represent some sea beast, of which we are the bane! Laterally thinking, mind you.

Why? The kite shield looks like something a knight would use, an order shield is what Lord British's soldiers use and the bronze shields are just butt ugly

I don't really fancy the order shield or the random kite shield type thing. It came to a tossup between the large round one, which reminds me of viking ships, and the tear kite, which are just plain sexy.

While vikings are awesome, I'm going to have to go with the tear kite.

Why not Wooden shields? they fictionally weigh less. .and float... seem alot more IC for someone on the sea to carry.. as it could double as a floatation device

Kite shields just rock, they look mint and have a nice sea born thing about them

Looks pretty neat, especially in Valorite to match the Marine's plate arms.

We tried Valorite looked a tad ugly..

What does a bronze shield look like? Aren't those quite hot!?

I like the tear kite shield. You can RP it made of leather too, therefore it floats like wood.

Leather isn't very good in water. Metal is better in water, as metal has straps and doesn't stick to your body when wet.

If floating is good, then why not go with a wooden shield?

Just use valorite, but non coloured..atleast it looks wooden.

Welp, I was under the impression that shields had to be Shadow Iron hued, but supposing they don't, I've displayed further suggested options below.

In order from left to right, we have a valorite hued tear kite shield, an un-hued tear kite shield, a wooden shield, and an un-hued bronze shield:


I didn't originally include the wooden shield either as metal shields have much superior resists, are seen as more professional equipment - Cove's military is no shabby militia! - and, as for the idea that they are bouyant, I thought the fact that we're clad in heavy plate armour defeated the purpose of floating in the first place.

Personally I'm still much in favour of the tear kite - probably the un-hued brown. Both are undoubtedly sexy, but I think the brown colour has the edge over the shadow iron. My second choice is probably the un-hued bronze shield.

Anyhow: do these additions change anyone's views?

Go with non hued Tear kite, but change the color of the plate arms. Go with like..copper or something.

Well, with valorite arms / gloves and the un-hued tear kite, we do look slightly like corsairs, it has to be said. That's another debate though.

Both Valorite and un-hued look good. I can't pick a favourite but both are decidedly better than the shadow iron one.

Personally I do like the tear kite. As for the colour, yes we did try a Valorite shield and as far as I recall command agreed it looked a bit wrong.
Either shadow or non-hued. Personally I think shadow would be better, extra shadow in the uniform keeping it more Covian and less Corsair-y. My 2 cents.

I voted Tear Kite, but tbh i agree with all the people who said wooden shields.. i know the resists will suck but still... for RP purposes it does make sense..

At the moment in the Navy Uniform I've put that armor helms aren't allowed at sea, only in land based combat. This is for RP purposes, as it doesn't make sense to put a plate helm on with a tiny eye slit, when you're trying to keep your balance and man the vessel during battle.

What would people think about the same for shields? Wooden on the ship, metal on land?

That makes sense, and also would be fine in pvp, cause that would most likely happen on land... although... having neither a helm or shield might be interesting with things like water ellies...

I certainly agree with the skullcap idea, as it makes good sense to increase vision when out at sea, and realisticly it would give a bit more freedom of movement without the weight of a helm.

But I still don't see the sense in using wooden shields for the purpose of them being able to float. What's to gain ICly from it? Sure, the our shields wouldn't sink, but clad in plate and chain armour, we certainly would! With that logic, we'd still be wearing leather armour as was originally devised by Garak.

I'm definitely a tear kite-er, all the way! I also think Arma may be right - that keeping them of shadow iron hue would be better to keep marines apart from the old corsairs. On terms of looks, though, I do prefer the un-hued.

Well my wooden shield idea was just a suggestion for those who liked the idea.

I think then for now we should trial Tear Kite shields. It will either come down to non-hued or Shadow; Jack's idea of Copper makes me think Grenadiers a bit too much. Let the coloured shield stay just for them.

Personally I'm going to try a non-hued Kite, just to see what it looks like. If that fails, I'll revert to Shadow.

Grenadiers is Bronze not copper....

Indeed he did.. he said that copper reminded him of the Grenadiers when they wear Bronze.. indeed he did.

One film might me remind me of another film, doesn't mean I think they're the same film.

So, I think we're decided up to this point that it's between un-hued and Shadow Iron Tear Kite shields. We'll try un-hued for now, and see how it goes, and will perhaps at a later stage try Shadow Iron.
