62  Element boards / The Church / (PR)Guards and Civilians - Working within the Church on: September 19, 2009, 01:05:04 pm
Involving the Citizenry/Army with the Church

It's been noted that until now there has been little way and little reward for the Guardsmen, citizens (and criminals) of Cove to interact with the Church.  There are penalties for heresy etc but no real carrot.  The following system is aimed at changing that.  From now on, attending Church events, completing tasks for the Church or just submitting reports to the Church will lead to an increased Church Regard of your character.  This will lead to your character gaining rank within the Church.  Guardsmen will also be awarded Duties where applicable, and civilians/thieves will also earn shillings.

Church Regard

Works the same way as it does in the Church system.  Submitting reports to the Church board or attending Church led hunts/events will earn people Church Regard.  These are simply updated on the person's admin file same way as they do with duties and shillings.  Citizen tasks such as crafting armour for the church will earn shillings as before but will also see them get some Church Regard.  Guards also get credited as they do now i.e Reports and Guardsman Duties.  Civilians submitting reports will get a small sum of shillings as well as Church Regard.  Not a lot of shillings.  The Church tithes money, it's not going to be eager to spend it.  Naturally, the shillings and Regard will depend on the Report and the work involved.

Regard/Shillings won't be awarded for simply naming someone as a suspected heretic.  A decent report should be submitted.

Same as the Church system, once the Church Regard amount is reached, a Trial is set for the person to get the next rank.

If you or someone else has submitted a report on the Civilian or In-character board that you feel is appropriate to the Church, write a short note in the Church Message box along with a link to the relevant thread.  The relevant Church Regard will be awarded in that thread.

The Church Ranks

The Witch Hunters - Exact same as the Church system.  Civilians, criminals and Guards (more suited to the scouts) report on suspected heretics.  If they prove themself as a witch hunter, the Inquisition beckons.

Inquisitor - This fanatic works feverishly to uncover the slightest trace of heresy, having proven themself as a Witch Hunter.  Where they go they whip up mass hysteria, urging people to denounce their neighbour, friends, or even their own family.  During the day the Inquisitor toils away in their profession, diligently keeping an eye out for heretics.  But when the Church calls, the don their black doublet and it is in the twilight hours that the Inquisitor truly works, methodically applying his or her tools until the heretic inevitably confesses.  They always do...

Witch Hunter - Recruited by the Church to scour both the remote glens and bustling streets of the town, the Witch Hunter is ever vigilent for signs of witchcraft and heresy.  Clad in their everyday clothes, there is nothing to differentiate the witch hunter from the other Guards or civilians of Cove.  They will quietly observe and report back on those they suspect of heresy.

The Church Guard - With the Templar Order still recovering, the Church has been forced to turn to the Army for assistance.  The Church Guard has been formed, taking in volunteers from among the army's Faithful.

Templi Guardsman: These Church Guardsmen has proved themselves as faithful and dependable, willing to carry out their Church duties without question or hesitation, clad in the white surcoat and black cloak of the Templi.  These warriors of Avatar are a living example to the Church Guardsmen below them and should lead and mentor them.

Church Guardsman: At first glance these guards appears to be like every other guard of Cove.  But when the Church calls, they will put aside their sash and kilt and don the white surcoat of the Templi.  Their duties will range from kicking in doors and arresting suspected heretics to venturing deep into the darkest holes of Sosaria in search of Guardian-spawn.  Under the guidance of the Templars, these Guards will demonstrate their steadfast faith time and again in service to Avatar and Cove.

The Church Circle - There is a place in the Church for those wishing to serve but who lack skill in battle.  The Church Circle offers the citizens a place to help the Priesthood run the Church and to ensure the concerns of hardworking Avatarians are heard.  Those who earn the favour of the Church may find themselves gaining influential friends.

Church Elder: Among the most trusted and faithful of Covians, the Elders have the ear of the Bishop himself.  Their concerns become his concerns.  The pious citizens help ensure the Church's grip on Cove is strong and that the people cooperate with the Church.  In exchange, should offices of influence and power become vacant, the Church will assure those in charge that they know the perfect person for the job.

Church Devotee: All are expected to attend Mass and aid the Church, but those who wish to demonstrate their faith more fully will become counted among the Church Devotees.  If they prove committed, in time they may be counted among the Elders of the Church.

Promotion

Same as the Church.  10 Church Regard for attending a Church event, 10 for a report.  If it's a very basic report then 5 Church Regard.  If it's something exceptional, then an additional 5 church Regard can be awarded.  Once 200 Church Regard is earned, they get a Trial and then promotion.  After that there is no need for them to get Church Regard.  Shillings and Guardsmen duties will be awarded as always.

How do I get involved?

Either speak to a Church member in person, or send a PM/ICQ (97154187).  Once the Church member is satisfied your character is suitable (i.e not a heretic), they will be granted their new Church Rank.

Note regarding Church uniforms

The Church uniforms such as the surcoats and doublets are only to be worn whilst on official church duty.  Anyone reported wearing these uniforms whilst not on official Church duty will face a harsh penalty.  If in doubt, ask the attending Church member.

My Lord Preceptor,

Word reached us that the elf Casca planned to attack Britain.  Therefore I led the Guardsmen to Castle British.  Many waited there, heathens and wytches alike but we kept our silence.  The Lady Dawn appeared and led this group into the sewers where we were assailed by Tokunan assassins.  We dispatched these foes and found the foul elf 'king'.  Portals took us to an unknown location, where again we fought off many assassins.  Finally, the guardian-spawned elf appeared and fought Dawn.  He vanished at the battle's climax, this Dawn claiming he had been taken by the Virtues.  Whether truth or blasphemy I cannot say.  Regardless, the elf is gone.

We returned to Britain where a Nathan Hawke offered the rule of Britannia to this Dawn.  'tis an outrage, to be led by a woman.  But as Cove doth not hold allegiance to the crown, one that shall not trouble us overly.

In Nomini Deus,

Roland Dagorian
Templar

But how did the Church come to be?  What of it's beginnings in Avatar's beloved Cove?

In the early days following the Remaking of the world, a small settlement arose, known as Cove.  In those days Cove was a settlement of infidels, following diverse made-up gods and praying to idols of wood, iron and stone.  But one man had seen Avatar's Truth, and was determined to convert the Covians to the ways of the Lord and His Virtues.  This pious man was Sanct Keldar of Rothermere, the founder of the Covian Church, blessed be his name.  The Covian Lord at that time wisely chose not to oppose the True Faith and granted Sanct Keldar a plot of land.  Sanct Keldar then built the original Church of Cove himself, by hand.  The present-day Church lies in the same plot of land and is constructed out of much of the original's stone.

Sanct Keldar had two sons.  The younger began the priesthood.  The elder and heir, called Ezekiel, became a knight and founded the Templi Order.  Sanct Keldar, led a glorious crusade against Blackthorn's Chaos shrine. Alas, the servants of evil attacked the Sanct and slew him.  But doubtless he now sitteth in Paradise at Avatar's right hand and doth await the Second Shattering of the world.  His armour was recovered by Sir Ezekiel.  In time Ezekiel had an heir and was martyred by servants of the Guardian.  Foul rumour doth suggest that Sir Ezekiel's brother was responsible for this deed, but 'tis clearly the lies of heathens and should be treated thusly with contempt.

The armour of Sanct Keldar was passed down by his descendants through Sir Ezekiel, a practice that hath continued .  The current heir, Sir Hugo of Rothermere, Templar Preceptor, doth currently possess the armour of Sanct Keldar, engraved with many past deeds.  In recent years the Covian Church hath faced many trials.  Sir Hugo declared a Crusade against the drow infesting the once-holy city of Trinsic.  Many answered his call but alas the Crusade faltered at the gates where they faced the drow and their Kaldorian allies.  The Church was struck a further blow during the orc invasion of Cove that took place at this time, during which many of the Church servants were slain as they slept.  At that time, all that remained of the Church Order was Sir Hugo, his squire Jema and Sanct Conrad Von Richter, blessed be his name, brother of Baron Octiovus Von Richter and later martyred during his time as Bishop.

The Church slowly grew during the reign of Baron Octiovus Von Richter but suffered a further blow when the Church suffered a mysterious attack.  Sir Hugo disappeared for some time and was feared slain.  The Church suffered damage.  The Baron and many Covians left Cove for Yew to escapeth a plague and the newly returned Commander, Gregor Eason, saw his chance to deal the Church a death blow.  During Mass, he seized his chance and confronted the priests, aided by the elf Delcarukder.  One priest was slain, the other arrested.  Three Faithful Guardsmen, Erik Arkay, Grief Dryfh Gry and Roland Dagorian in turn arrested the Commander and released the priest.  Alas, the heretics in the ranks supported the Commander and the last of the Church servants were exiled from Cove.  The Church was further desecrated by an explosive alchemical substance and was torn down.

For a long time Cove was a land of Godlessness but in time the Baron returned as did a recovered Sir Hugo.  The Church was rebuilt and the people repented their apostasy, returning once more to the Avatarian Faith.  A new Golden era of Piety and Faithfulness shall surely Dawn in Cove.  Praise be unto Avatar!

In Nomini Deus,

Reynard Destain
Bishop of Cove

- Postword - Bishop Reynard was martyred in year *smudged* but his legacy liveth on.

The Beginnings of the Avatarian Faith

A shining beacon of Faith and Virtue, the Covian Church standeth, the centre of the Avatarian Faith in Cove, indeed all of the north-east of Britannia.  Like a protective shepherd watching over their flock, the Church standeth vigil over the people and reassureth travellers that Cove hath indeed embraced the evident Truth of Our Lord Avatar, and His eight Holy Virtues.  Just as each Virtue is formed from a combination of the three Principles, Truth, Love and Courage, so is the Church thus formed from the three Orders.  The Witch Hunters roam the land, seeking Truth.  Eternal damnation awaits those who hath turned their backs on Avatar, and so it with Love that the priests of the Church preach endlessly of the Virtues and of the Faith, converting all those of goodly demeanour.  And lastly, the Templi of the Church show their devotion to Avatar by embracing Courage in the defence of the Faithful.

But how did the Virtues come to be?  How did Avatar reveal Himself to His people?

For many years, the Old World of Sosaria was largely ruled by the wytch-lord Mondain, a foul creature of evil.  But not all Sosarians bowed down to this heathen.  Some had faith that a Higher Being existed, who would free the world of this wytch and usher in a new Kingdom of Light.  One such man was Lord British.  He led the resistance against Mondain and in time his faith was rewarded.

In the last days of the Old World, the Higher Being chose to reveal Himself.  A mysterious stranger appeared in the land, spreading hope and many was the miracle He performed.  In time this Stranger confronted Mondain, and cast him down into the Abyss, destroying the Gem of Immortality.  The resulting cataclysm was immense, casting off the shackles of Godlessness that gripped the world.  In His Righteous Wrath at the sins of the people, the Old World of Sosaria was shattered, remade as the Lord intended.  The pagan elves were a particular focus of Our Lord's punishment, the pagan city of Heartwood was cast out and the elves remaining in what is now Britannia were unable to return to that vile place of paganism.

The world was remade, Lord British restoring Order to the land, now known as Britannia.  Lord British's faith in the Higher Being was rewarded and it was thus revealed to him by the Time Lord that the Higher Being had manifested Himself as a physical being to confront Mondain directly.  The Stranger was in fact the Higher Being's physical manifestation!  The Time Lord further revealed the Virtues the Higher Being wished the people to follow.  The Higher Being was in fact the embodiment of these Virtues, and in time became known as the Avatar of the Virtues, as He is known now.  Lord British immediately set about establishing the Virtues, and created eight shrines, one for each Virtue.  The Virtues are Honour, Compassion, Valour, Sacrifice, Spirituality, Humility, Honesty and Justice.  Alas, not all accepted Avatar into their hearts.  One such man, Blackthorn, opposed Lord British in his crusade to spread Avatar's Word, and promoted Chaos, creating his own shrine in mockery of the Virtuous ones.

The Faith began to spread as more and more chose to follow the Virtues and accept Avatar as their Saviour.  It is believed that Avatar shall cometh again, to shatter the land once more and bring about His Kingdom of Heaven, a Paradise that shall surely last for all eternity.  Only the Faithfull shall dwell in this Eternal Kingdom, the Faithless and the heathens shall be cast unto the Abyss for an eternity of Damnation and Torment.  The Guardian doth dwell in the Abyss and it is his servants who practice wytchery and seek to corrupt the Faithful.  Over three centuries have passed since Mondain's destruction, but evil doth still persist and must be destroyed wherever 'tis found.

Church Promotion

This will be vastly simpler than the previous system.  In short, completing tasks, attending events and posting reports on the Church board will earn you Church Regard points, similar to the Civilian ShillingsAcolytes, Templi Squires and Witch Hunters who earn the required Church Regard will be set a Trial of Faith  and upon proving themselves, will be annointed fully into their specific Order as Monk, Templar or Inquisitor, well prepared for the challenges of the Avatarian Faith.

Upon joining the Church a proper introduction will be given on this challenging and rewarding element of Covian life.

Basic Duties

Acolytes/Witch Hunters/Templi Squires:
These Church servants are the eyes and ears.  They do not enforce Church law, they report those breaking it and assist those enforcing it.  A Squire, for example, would not try to arrest a Regular Guardsman.

Modes of Address

Squire:  Friar or Squire

Acolyte: Friar/Sister(female) or Acolyte

Witch Hunter: Witch Hunter by those who know them.  Otherwise, no specific address

Templar: Sir (name) or Father

Monk/Cleric (if female): Father/Sister

Inquisitor: Inquisitor

Templar Preceptor: Lord Preceptor or Father

Bishop: Lord Bishop or Father

High Inquisitor: High Inquisitor

Introduction

For years, the Church's influence has waxed and waned in Cove.  War and crusades thinned the ranks of the Templar Order.  But that which survives is made stronger.  The Church ... hath returned.

OOC:

The Church has been reorganised and will be streamlined, superceding the current system.  The new system will be similar in a lot of ways to the original Church of Cove.  Church Recruitment is now open.  Furthermore, in the coming days there will be information on how non-church characters can get more involved with the Church.  Some points:

*The Avatarian Faith is the only religion recognised or tolerated in Cove.
*Covians are generally Avatar-fearing individuals
*Heretics and enemies of the Church can expect harsh punishment
*The Covian Church has similarities with medieval Christianity but it has many differences also.  The Avatarian Faith is centered around Avatar as the Higher Being and the Virtues.  There is lore available on the Church board, expect more to follow.

Existing members: Due to the recent changes, existing Church members on the roster will be changed to Church Servant until integrated into the new structure.  Feel free to PM or ICQ me with any questions.

Recruitment: Recruitment is now open.  New recruits to the Church may find themselves briefly ranked as Church Servant until introduced to their duties.  That done, they can join one of the three Orders.

The Church Orders

The Church is made up of three branches.

The Templars
-The Militant Order of the Church.  They will fight the Church's enemies without mercy and without remorse.

Templar Preceptor -

Templar  -

Templí Squire – These are men who have given their life over to fight for Avatar, they are often of noble blood and the ways of fighting is new to them. They work hard to hone their combat skills and study the scriptures often, but also yearn for adventure, they are often also young and idealistic, and truly want to help Cove and it’s people and also truly believe all the enemies they fight and kill are evil folks.  Dutifully reporting all blasphemies they overhear to the Church, they will stand side by side with the Templars as the Church's fury is unleashed.

The Witch Hunters and Inquisition
- If the Templars are the iron fist of the Church, the Witch Hunters are the eyes and ears.  From the woods and moors to the claustrophobic confines of the dungeons, these zealous Avatarians will balk at nothing in their pursuit of heresy.

High Inquisitor -

Inquisitor -

Witch Hunter - Recruited by the Church to scour both the remote glens and bustling streets of the town, the Witch Hunter is ever vigilent for signs of witchcraft and heresy.  Clad in anonymous, travel-stained clothing, the Witch Hunter will not confront the faithless, instead reporting everything to the Church.  But when the mob is roused, the Witch Hunter will stand at the forefront, torch in hand.

The Priesthood
- Having devoted their lives to the service of Avatar, a lifetime of scholarship and preaching awaits.  The teachings of Avatar must be passed on, confessions must be heard and the Guardian denounced.  The Priests may find themselves confronted by the servants of the Guardian, and their faith must be unfaltering.

Bishop -

Monk -

Acolyte - Disciples have only just embarked on their path to enlightenment, they can read and write, which is more than can be said for most of the Covian masses. Their road however, is a hard one, as they are expected to do many menial chores around the church such as stacking the scriptures, mucking out the stables, and more.

People of Cove,

Rumour doth hint that the foul elf, Casca, shall be attacking the city of Britain this eve.  This foul thing hath fully embraced his heritage as a creature of the Guardian and must be smote down.  From the Barracks we shall travel to Britain and free our lands of the influence of this elf who would be king.

OOC: This is an EM event which starts at 7:30.  The place will likely be mobbed with roleplayers and non-roleplayers but regardless, those attending should treat it like any other event and be on their best behaviour.

There is a Treasure Hunt at 8 led by Anna so we won't be lingering in Britain.

Be aware that any spawn may be aimed at artifact-wielders but our cross-healing and close formation should see us through.  Be aware it will likely be very laggy.

My Lord Preceptor Hugo,

As thou art aware, Church and army forces assailed the dungeon Doom.  Many undead were slain, much gold and bones recovered.  Several sites of desecration were purged by fire.  Chaplain Deacon and Squire Grayson accompanied this holy expedition.  The Guardsmen were shown Umbra, it was made clear that such an unholy fate awaiteth Cove shouldst the Church fail.

We treked through the woods, slaying the gargoyles that assailed us.  In time, we reached the entrance to Doom.  We entered.  At the bottom, many foes awaited, but all were slain.  We found animated skeletons, zombies, ghouls, foul bats and liches.  We pressed on, putting all to the sword.  We encountered a room that flashed with light and darkness, separating half of us.  Eventually, we were reunited.  After further slaying, we retreated.  Alas, we took a wrong turn and three of us were assailed by an arch-creature of the Guardian that overcame us, casting us out.  We eventually reunited with the expedition, fighting out way to a portal leading out of the dungeon, Chaplain Deacon and mine own self guarding the way.

Regrouping in Cove, we discovered that much gold and daemon bones had been gained.  The Church coffers doth overflow with gold.  Praise unto Avatar!

In nomini Dominus,

Roland Dagorian
