The dark clouds made the day seem as dusk. In the shadows of Cove crept a silent figure around with a thin blade well hidden in his sleeve. Tom the Redeye was not a man to be thought of as good. He was wanted and known for his cruel and cold behaviour. Three persons had been killed by the silent blade, and the Militia had not even been close to his capture.
Tom crept silently along the side of a shack. Within he could here a baby's scream and a mother and father being over-excited. A new kid, eh? Tom thought, sneaking to the window and peering inside. The husband was the carpenter of Cove, and the mother a weaver. The little kid was all wrapped up in some sheets, and Tom thought it looked... delicious...
He snuck under the window and to the door, opened it without a sound and coming inside the well lit house, from behind the big carpenter. He took notice of the big hammer leaning against the wall only a few feet from the carpenter. With his arms he would be able to grab it and swing it quickly and hard. Tom had to be careful.
He revealed the lethal knife and took a few steps toward the carpenter.
Die you fool! Tom thought standing now right behind him.
"We're moving to Vesper dear," said the man to his wife.
"Why?"
"Because I hate this town filled with creeps trying to kill me with a knife!" Tom's eyes widened and he gasped. The shock was more than he could take. With a sudden movement the carpenter had grabbed the hammer and smashed it upward, hitting Tom right under his face. The spined cracked and sent Tom flying backward, hitting the floor with a dump sound. The last movements of his body was only reflexes, sending out the remnants of what was once the dreadful Tom the Redeye. Killed by a carpenter who just wanted to leave town and felt he would kill the man sneaking up to him. So easy... So... damn... easy.

And that is the first minutes of Mathus' life. Experiencing his father killing a murderer. What at tragedy.
Mathus grew up in the town of Vesper learning the craft as a carpenter, but at the age of 15 a terrible sickness grabbed hold of him. For three years he laid in the bed, only the love of his father and mother, who had been unable to get other children, kept him alive. Their sick child brought them to the brinck of poverty, had it not been for a wandering librarian, travelling through Vesper. Somehow, the kindness and humor this librarian brought with him held Mathus alive. In the days the Librarian stayed in their house, he told stories to Mathus of great warriors and wise priests. Somehow the tales of blood and violence frightened Mathus, and instead he wanted to hear more of the priests.
Sadly the librarian had to leave, but Mathus' father asked him a favour:
"Take my son to your library. Teach him your skills... I have forsaken him..." The librarian agreed, since he loved the company of Mathus.
When they arived at the library Mathus had gotten more sick. He was now all gray in the face. But the monks at the library knew a cure, and suddenly he was cured of the aweful disease. He kept his gray color for months, thus the monks and the librarian called him Mathus Gray.
Mathus learned to read, write and speak Britannian fluently with sense of diplomacy. As 26 years old he was sent to a monestary to help building a library there, he met a priest there who made such an impression to him, that he asked how he could become a priest himself.
Seeing Mathus ahd already the basic skills and knowledge of the Avatarian faith, the Father told him, that the city of Cove was in need of disciples for their Church. Mathus left immediately and came under the service of Sir Hugo, the preceptor of the Templars. He had many dreams and ideas, and he was willing to work hard to achieve them.
