16  In Character Boards / In Character Board / Patrol around Cove on: September 04, 2010, 08:04:59 pm

After my earlier rather embarassing failure at the Orc Fort I decided to expand on the slight tour of the area I had been given, in search of some easier work to help boost my self-confidence again.

I started making my way east from Cove, stopping to help clear the woods of the usual critters that could attack travellers, such as trolls, ogres and the odd ettin.

I eventually saw a fenced in area in the distance between the trees, and curiously made my way closer to take a look. The look did not last long however, as all manners of undead rushed to meet me, and I decided that it'd be a good idea to leave it a very short visit.

I remembered a small outpost Watchman Railen had shown me up near Altmere earlier, so I turned north to go have a closer look at it, but sadly there was nothing else of interest there.

Once again I made my way east, and on the way encountered what looked like a recently covered hole in the ground just on the side of the road, being guarded by an ettin. I had a poke around with my spear, but was unable to get any real idea of what was buried there.

Continuing further east towards the mountains I realized that I had been so busy with my new duties all day that I had completely forgotten to eat anything. Fortunately the forest was rich with animal life, and catching something to eat didn't take very long.

Feeling replenished after the meal I continued east yet again, and soon came upon something interesting again...

A dark cave with a warning sign outside. How could I possibly resist?

After a bit of a trek into the dungeon, and after killing a fair few Harpies in the process, I decided to return to Cove again. All in all it was a very rewarding little trip, returning with over 5000 gold pieces and nearly 600 feathers.

The plague is a dangerous thing, and killing rats is something that happens to be well within my otherwise rather limited combat skills, so this seemed like a perfect task for me. I started by heading into Cove itself and asking people there if any of them had any rat problems, as well as just doing my best to search around to find any... I couldn't seem to find a single rat though, but an alarming number of cats...

Some of the people in town however mentioned that while the rat population in town had decreased following previous guards' attempts at culling their numbers, they still remained in the woods just outside of town... So thats where I went next!

With a bag full of dead and not too pleasant rodents slung over my shoulder I made my way back towards town, and towards the water. I made a fire near the shore, and proceeded to burn the possibly plague-bearing carcasses.

All in all, it turned out quite okay. Or it will have at least, once I get rid of the stench... I think a bath and a long walk might be needed...

Having just joined the army and been given a tour of the immediate Cove area I could not wait to get soldiering, as it were. Watchman Railen who had been showing me around kindly agreed to extend the tour to go meet the locals at the orc fort to the south.

We made our way to the fort, and ran into the orcs almost immediately, of course.

All went well, and I was able to keep the orcs off of me better then I had expected until we came across an orc more then twice the size of those around it, just in the center of the fort. I was taken by surprise by the sheer strength of the giant orc, and found myself knocked to the ground in seconds. Fortunately Watchman Railen was able to help pull me away to safety, and after a second to clear my head we charged back in again, with the added support of Regular Arcanist Celuvian Haap.

We eventually retreated back to Cove to patch up our bruises (mostly mine), and get a break. All in all we brought back over 6000 gold pieces.

Attendees:
Watchman Railen
Guardsman Recruit Graum Trolle
Regular Arcanist Celuvian Haap

Full name:
Graum Trolle

Age:
Mid twenties

Place of birth:
Border of Yew and West Altmere

Appearance:
Graum is shaggy, rough and wild and stands just above average height, wiry and well built from a life of hard work in the forest. His clothing is worn and has been patched up time and time again. Smelling of dirt and the woods, his hair a mess and face unshaven, and his lips always curled into a cheerful and impish smile. Whenever in uniform Graum can't help but look just a little bit out of place.

Personality:
Graum has spent most of his life in the forest, working by himself, and as such is not always comfortable in social situations and can at first appear shy, while in fact he is just unused to such things. He is a man of sharp wit, despite a near complete lack of education, and a man of deep faith and strong determination. He takes great pride in his work, and very much enjoys doing his best to be good at it. To those he befriends he is also a most loyal companion, although he rarely does get too close to those around him otherwise.

History:
Born far out into the woods of the border between Yew and West Altmere Graum spent his days in the forest from the time he was old enough to walk. His father was a trapper and a fur trader, while his mother cared for Graum and his siblings at home. Growing up Graum was always very content with his life and with his home, while his older siblings moved away one after another. He never understood his brothers' and sister's desire to leave and go somewhere else. He never understood their talk of going to "the city". Graum was content and happy in the forest.
As he grew up he learned to hunt, and worked with his father in the woods to help support the family. He never quite had his father's talent for it though, and was always just a little too absent-minded to really do a great job, but he was a very eager worker none the less.
The northern forests were always dangerous, but they were so familiar to Graum that he never felt worried there. That is, until very recently... The wind seemed to howl just a little bit louder, the darkness seemed just a little bit darker, and well... Things were just not right. Something was unleashed in the woods. Others sensed it too, and it wasn't long before their neighbours were moving away. Graum had nowhere else to go, no other skills or plans to really offer him many options, so he decided to take the last way out that any young man had... He had to enlist!
