Grenadier Trial: Arel Mortan

Greetings Guardswoman Mortan,

The paperwork for your promotion to Junior Guardsman is all but finalised so here are your Grenadier Trials.

Good luck lass. I know you won't let me down.

*signed and stamped with the Grenadier seal*

Raiden, Grenadier Captain.

Ability To Fight

Lead an expedition to the Orc Valley in southern Yew. Your party will fight it's way deep into the orc mines and put paid to their little operation. Call on your soon to be brother Grenadiers to lend a hand in blowing up the orc's mining operation.

Conditions

At least 4 other guardsmen must accompany you on this mission and at least one must be a full Grenadier for demoltion purposes.

Brotherhood

To truly appreciate the Grenadier brotherhood you have to be part of it, but to help you settle into your new squad seek out three Grenadiers and try to find out what makes them tick.

Conditions

Interview 3 Grenadiers.
Find out information such as place of birth, family, motivation for joining Covian army, motivation for becoming a Grenadier and anything else you might think is useful.

Discipline

Lead a "naked" hunt into the ice caverns and launch an attack on the ratman stronghold there. As your party will be lightly armoured they will have to heed your orders well, a true test of combat discipline.

Keep them in line lass and leave no-one behind. After you have led your assault withdraw to the snowy wastes of the lost lands and set up camp for at least 20 minutes. Keep your party occupied during this time with some discipline training.

Conditions

At least 4 guardsmen must accompany you on this expedition.
For the Ratman fort attack magelings and those who use two handed weapons may wear their hat or helm, the rest may arm their shields. Of course you wont be totally naked. Boots, kilts, sashes and under shirts will be worn also.
Build an outpost in the frozen wastes of the lost lands and man it for no less than 20 mins, drilling the men to keep them warm.

Loyalty

When you join the Grenadiers you will of course need to be replaced in the regular ranks. To prove your continued loyalty the the Baronship you will spread the word throughout the lands.

Conditions

Place 30 recruitment banners at the following locations: Dungeons, Ilshenar Shrines, New Haven and popular shops and markets.

The Grenadier Oath

When you have completed all the tasks above seek me out to swear the Grenadier Oath.

Post a full report including sketches of each task as you complete them - Good luck!

Loyalty

As soon as I saw my Trials had been written, I set out to work straight away.

To begin my trials, I began with the rather lengthy recruitment run. Thirty Banners were to be placed all around Dungeons, Ilshenar Shrines, Shops and finally Markets.

First came the following ten dungeons:

And then came the Shrines of Ilshenar:

And finally, the miscellaneous markets, shops, inns and banks:

So, Captain Morana. Thirty banners! In all the desired locations! Another Covian's hard day's work, I'd say.

Brotherhood

Interviewee Number 1:
Marcus Tel'var, Junior Grenadier.

This is my first report since my arrival back in Cove today. It is a pleasure to be writing and serving for you under your wing once again, Commander. A long time ago, you requested that I interview three Grenadiers as one of my trial tasks to become a Grenadier myself. Marcus Tel'var was my first interviewee.

I asked Marcus about his family, to which he replied he has acquired himself a wife as of late: Mrs Kelly (A surname was never given, and I did not wish to pry). She used to work in the Green Goblin, but now works in the Covian Bakery. An outlined dislike and distaste for his father, Demarian Tel'var, was expressed within this specific question, also. These were the only two family members he mentioned, however. My second question was about his place of birth. He informed me that he grew up in Britain, and his career in the Covian Army was first inspired by a leaflet that had been placed around the area he lived. At this time, he was serving for a different Guard, presumably around Britain.  His reasoning for aspiring towards being a Grenadier was apparently to exceed his father's abilities and service, as he portrayed himself to percieve his father's service in the Army rather disgraceful in comparison to his own. The name Demarian does seem familiar to me, but I do not believe I know him in person as such. My additional question that was -not- within the specification was "Who do you consider the best role-model as a Grenadier, and which the worst?" He responded that you are the best role-model as a Grenadier (which admittedly was expected), and that his father was the worst. This also did not bear much suprise to me.

I thanked Marcus for his time, and it was an absolute pleasure to meet him.

Interviewee Number 2:
Darek Milako II, Regular Grenadier.

My second interview was with Darek Milako, a Regular Grenadier. After recieving his note attached to my Trials, I decided to pay him a visit. I found Mr. Milako in the Green Goblin, and I proceeded with my questions. It appears he has a brother called Gregory, and like Marcus, also has a grudge against his father of some sorts. His inspiration was Erik Arkay in his Recruit days, and he aspired to be a well-respected Grenadier like him. My additional question was if he had any advice for me as an aspiring Grenadier. He replied that being a Grenadier was not a walk in the park; it is a serious commitment which I must hold myself to dearly. He stated that my attitude would be crucial to maintaining my bronze arms.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank Darek Milako for his assistance in this task.

Interviewee Number 3:
Raiden Morana, Commander.

My final interview took place with yourself. As you are aware of all the content of the interview, I shall just place my sketches of this interview below as evidence of this taking place.

So throughout these interviews, I learnt a fair few things:

1) I shall be working with far too many men for me to tolerate.

2) Who I should look up to within the squad.

3) That I need a good attitude and commitment towards my job.

4) That the best advantage of being a Grenadier is being taught by the best to be the best.

Discipline

Leading Guardsman:
Arel Mortan, Junior Guardsman

Attending Guardsmen:
Kas Valentine, Senior Arcanist
Darek Milako, Regular Grenadier
Thomas Aylmer, Junior Guardsman
Bersi, Watchman

After spending quite a while attempting to wake a Grenadier and some lazy guardsmen from bed, we set out to the caverns of Ice for some cold action! It seemed that myself, Aylmer and Valentine had waited hours before the rest of the men gathered.

We eventually got to the dungeon, and headed in towards the rat men. The caves were absolutely freezing, and I was actually afraid to order them to take their clothes off, incase they beat me or something like it. I felt uncomfortable enough as it was, as all the guardsmen assisting me were men. I must admit it was extremely hard carrying out this task, as the complexity of it and my personal circumstances made it majorly hard for me to communicate with the men. I think I managed, though. The job was done accordingly.

We set up a small outpost for a few minutes where the ratmen were slain, so they would not make a re-appearance too quickly. After this, I led the men outside to the Lost Lands, where Junior Aylmer chopped the wood we needed for the bigger outpost we were about to construct. I encouraged the men to run about and keep building so that they could keep warm. I never imagined that men could be so whiney whilst working. Whilst I appreciate their efforts to assist me, they did not shut up for a moment! Especially that Valentine bloke. To further keep the men warm, we set up numerous fires and did exercises whilst they were not clad with armour. I led them to a passage way where they could run around some more on the only visable track of soil around. Three of the men (excluding Milako) got confused, and I had to retrieve them from the dead-end passage. They seemed to think I was sending them to a specific location, rather than to the end to turn back and run back down. Bantering aside, all the guardsmen were very "well-behaved". I hope this task has been sufficient, Commander.

Ability to Fight

Attending Guardsmen:
Kas Valentine, Senior Arcanist
Darek Milako II, Regular Grenadier
Thomas Aylmer, Junior Guardsman

Darek Mhilako also helped me with this task; he was the Grenadier we took along as assistance to blow the caves up, along with all the orc's trash within. One of the excess arcanists summoned us a portal to the Valley, and we went straight in after arming up. We went straight through, taking anything down that was in our way. We wandered around a bit and found our ways into the second level of the caves. We all got swarmed a couple of times and the Scouts caught us off-guard. However, even without commands, the guardsmen were on form and healed well... All except from the Arcanists "accidentally" casting spells on the individuals non-able of magic.

I requested that Darek blew up various parts of the cave where it looked the most habited. He only had a few explosives left, but he did a really good job. We fought our way back out of the cave and we even found a potential Recruit/Covian Citizen along the way. We headed back to Cove, and we managed to collect 12,054 gold coins.

Just the oath now, Commander! I hope this is sufficient.
