Seems like a solid plan, at least as solid as a free-shard concept can get. I'm all for putting time and effort into this if you're considering it. Might even be willing to put money into it. Add me on skype Runarthors.

The same grievous error repeats itself over and over in the making of RP freeshards. It's the lack of centralization. My ideal vision of a freeshard would be one SINGLE city, with a limited area around it (forest, mines, mountains, small village etc). Alas, people tend to dream too big, conjuring up these massive maps with the naive conviction they might be able to fill it with hundreds or thousands of roleplayers. It's not going to work. You need to start small and centralized and only when the gates are overflowing and roleplayers have trouble moving without rubbing arses THEN might you begin to consider adding an expansion to the realm.

My point is: I have a burning desire to roleplay in UO again and am very interested in a freeshard adventure, but I will not participate in something obviously doomed from the start. I'm not directing this at Torrak's project fyi, as I've no conception of what that is about. Torrak could you share some more info on where you're currently at in this and what the idea behind it was? I think some of us would love to hear more about it.

Hello again, guys. Just wanted to drop a note on the progress. www.nineworldsbooks.com has received a little makeover and now features 3 short-stories. On the horizon is a short-story series featuring the protagonist from Black Standards. Looking forward to start working on that. Hey folks,

For those who don't know me, I am Runar Thor, player of Hrothgar, Raziel Von Richter and a few others. Haven't played UO in a while but I'm glad to see the show is still rolling.

I just wanted to drop a word about my new website www.nineworldsbooks.com and hope that some of you will pay a visit. The website is basically a launchpad for my story collection called "Nine Worlds". So far I have written and published two short-stories on the website and I am in the middle of writing an epic fantasy novel which will hopefully see the light of day in the next couple of years. While I'm writing the book I intend to publish a short-story now and then on the website, in-between chapters in addition to various other features such as the "Author's Highlight" where I will publish an article on a specific race, character, nation, land and so on. Currently in the middle of negotiations with an illustrator so hopefully I'll also have some official art to go with that.

The stories "Black Standards" and "Blood & Rain" are both available for download for free in three different formats (.PDS .ePub and .mobi)

We should make this thread the "My first days of UO" thread.. A place to reminisce about the confusing first days of UO...


I remember the first day i logged onto UO about 8 or 9 years ago, i was killing skeletons in Britain cemetary when i met a friendly knight who insisted that i come and meet his king and queen.. That was my first encounter with RP and even though i don't remember the name of that guild, i remember that i had an amazing time.

While i was not around to witness your rise from recruit to junior, since i've returned i've seen that you have been an upstanding guardsmen and your activity and sense of duty has not gone unnoticed among army command. I've set you three separate trials that you shall complete so that you may finally gain the badge of a regular.

Trial I

The coffers are one of the most important aspects of a successful city, lately the Covian coffers have begun to slowly deplete with the absence of a bailiff coupled with the lack of income related to hunts and mining expedition. I want you to do your part and organize a good old fashion hunt to the depths of the dungeon of Despice. You'll gather gold for the coffers and return it safely to the Covian treasury.

Task Outlining

* Organize a hunt to despice with no less then 5 guardsmen.
* Collect no less then 30.000 gold pieces for the treasury.
* Attach a report below with scetches.

Trial II

I have received intelligence detailing a possible assassination plot targeting several Covian dignitaries and nobles. I want you to uncover and derail this plot and make an example to all who dare to threaten the Covian Empire. I have an underworld contact who's name shall be disclosed to you in person by me, you will begin by tracking down this agent and interrogating him about the plot.

Task Outlining

* Make contact with the underworld contact and interrogate him for information regarding the assassination plot.
* Amass as many covians to help you as you can.
* Attach a report below with scetches.

Trial III

It is a bit unorthodox to give a guardsmen these kinds of orders but i've noticed that foreign visits are not as common as they once were. It is because of this that i want you to get together with the staff of the Green Goblin and organize a fun and creative tavern night in the goblin and advertise it outside of the Covian borders so that we may have attendance from all corners of Sosaria.

Task Outlining

* Co-ordinate a tavern night in the Green Goblin and aim for record breaking attendance.
* Convince the Green Goblin staff to assist you and use creativity and imagination.
* Attach a report below with scetches.

Keitaro! You've been a fine example of a grenadier ever since you joined up with the 1st. I think its time to set you your trials so you may be recognized as a fully commissioned grenadier! I expect you to follow these orders by the letter and show me that you have the discipline and sense of duty to fulfill the honorable position of a grenadier.

Trial I

In the last few weeks i have begun to see disorganization in the ranks and the lack of discipline is becoming ever so apparent. On top of that we have the grenadier numbers at an all time low, so your task is simple. Raise interest in the legendary Baron's 1st Grenadiers and strike a decisive blow to anarchy in the ranks by hosting an organized drill.

Task Outlining

* Host an event consisting of initially a lecture on the grenadiers followed by an extensive drill on orders and general discipline.
* Make sure attendance is as high as possible.
* Attach a report below with scetches.

Trial II

The Covian army has seen grander days, morale is low and our numbers are slowly dwindling. If we are to restore our former glory then we must maintain a fresh flow of new recruits. I am charging you with the task of organizing a grand recruitment event, use creativity and customize the event however you like within the borders of the imperial law of recruitment.

Task Outlining

* Organize a recruitment event consisting of either a parade, recruitment stalls, grand banners, public speeches or all of the above.
* Use creativity and amass as many covians to help you as you can.
* Attach a report below with scetches.

Trial III

The lack of regular patrols and sentries is beginning to worry me, i want you to organize three separate sentries followed by a patrol into the orc fort where you will strike at the brute breeding grounds by grounding one of those colossal creatures.

Task Outlining

* Organize a sentry in the household district, Covetown Gates and on the road above the shire.
* Lead a patrol into the orc fort and slay a brute.
* Attach a report below with scetches.
