In Character Boards / In Character Board / *a letter arrives for Hrothgar*

Hrothgar,
Ye've always had my respect and so it is with some regret that I inform ye that the alliance we were hoping to build is no more, and we must go to war. The actions of your men, and specificially, your church, against Calantha, a Kaldorian citizen, will not be tolerated. That your men would torture and brutalise a woman they knew was in the early stages of pregnancy sickens me to the core. Their cowardly actions resulted in the loss of her child, and a loss of honour for Cove as a whole. Send us those responsible and this war can end as quickly as it started. Fail to do so, and the seas around Cove will turn red with Covian blood.

I am. And by the way, the rides list and map is up on the Nottingham Goose Fair site ( www.nottinghamgoosefair.co.uk) - there's some insane stuff going to be there so bring your strong stomachs please! (Anyone who doesn't want to ride gets to hold coasts and bags!) We're meeting at the hotel (Jury's Inn, close to the station) between 12 and 1pm. Anyone not wanting to do the fair, we'll be going to the Pit and the Pendulum after - try grab a table upstairs. Downstairs is usually nicer but there's a thrash metal DJ on Saturday nights which effectively rules out any conversation. PS Eason's a pussy!

I'm really sorry to hear this. It's terrible to lose someone so young. Sympathies to Kal and his family.

Trinsic is also a major port so fish and imported luxury goods too.
As for rules, KISS. (Keep it Simple, Stupid). The more complex they get, the more confused players become and the less fun the event will be.

There are quite a few problems here. First of all, the southern guilds (DOT, E-V, A^K) have been enemies of Grd and wouldn't aid them in a million years. LB would (and are) aiding them, but pretty much every other RP guild out there hates them with a vengeance. Not to mention most of the southern guilds are blue to Grd and do not wish to change that. So that's your first problem.
Problem two is, as you say yourself, you don't have time to organise this. I know from bitter experience that organising an ambitious scenario like this, whilst rewarding, is also incredibly stressful. (I organised the Kaldor invasion of Trinsic 2.5 years ago and agreed to be jailed for two weeks after just to give myself time to recover. Which is twice as long as the scenario lasted!) War does generate a lot of activity and RP. However it also generates a lot of whining and complaints, which the GMs and AGMs then have to spend time sorting out. Sorry, but that's a fact of life.
Not trying to put you off, but those are the things you must take into account. Good luck.

Our RP styles just don't mix. The main thing is that we like to plan events (that's events, not the results of them) and want some warning if a guild is going to turn up en masse, whereas Grd are more spur of the moment and think it's OK to turn up with no warning at all. I always had a pretty good arrangement with Eason about planning events so I'm hoping that will continue.

Just to say best of luck to those who stay in BoC. You've kept the best people (I knew you couldn't stay away, Eason!) so I'm sure you'll do just fine. And of course, Kaldor is still here for some interaction should you be up for it. We'll be staying blue to Grd though, so those guys who have gone there, it was nice knowing you, buh-bye now.

OOC Boards / OOC Board / Re: A Note on Roleplaying

Interesting thread.
The trouble with permadeath is that it is very easy to die in PvP, even for a highly-skilled character who has taken months, even years, to train. UO is simply not designed with permadeath in mind. In a realistic world, Kaldor (or Cove, or any army) would have hundreds of grunts who would go into battle, leaving the commander and general (or baron, or whatever Cove has) to direct the battle from relative safety behind the front line. But since this is UO, battles are more likely to be 10-15 a side skirmishes, and the officers have to muck in. The UO world is not realistic. Thus, enforcing permadeath would only put people off roleplaying.
However, I do understand where you're coming from. Take the Barandth case recently. Barandth used to be grandmaster of the Trinsic paladins. Then he was seduced by a vampire and fell in love with her. He was rejected by Trinsic and after coming close to death following an attack by a daemon (Raide), they left him to die. Cal took him back to Strongholt to recuperate, where she discovered he had Kaldorian blood. He is the adopted son of Arcain, but his real father was a Kaldorian who had settled near Minoc. She gave him a place in the army, but made it clear that he should not persue the relationship with the vampire. (As Jess said, Cal has a particular hatred of the undead). He did anyway, and let her turn him. Cal saw this as a terrible betrayal...not only did he fail to keep his promise, but he also corrupted his Kaldorian blood by allowing himself to be turned into a vampire, then attempted to lie about it. He should have been executed. IC it makes no sense for Cal or any Kaldorian to let him live. But he decided he didn't want to kill off the character, which left us with a half-finished scenario and no closure.
Now, I am against permadeath in battle, unless someone actually wants to kill off a character. But in larger terms, then perhaps it should be something that happens if you do pursue a certain course of actions, such as betraying your nation, or becoming a serial killer, and so forth. However, it has to be optional...the player pays the monthly fee and puts the time into developing their characters so it really shouldn't be up to anyone else to tell them when that character must die.
So, what about battles? Over the course of a war, it makes no sense that an army continues to be daisy fresh. They should get injuries, they should get battle weary, perhaps demoralised, and so forth. If someone clobbers you with an axe and you're wearing leather, it's going to leave a mark. Perhaps it breaks your arm and you can't wield two-handed weapons for a month. Or perhaps you get an arrow in the thigh and can't run for a few weeks, but can only move at a walk. Maybe you take a serious head wound from being bashed with a mace, and drop 10 points of intelligence.
Things like this add realism, and they have consequences which may be detrimental to your character, but don't stop your roleplaying them. And as Jess said, RPing injuries, or healing the injuries, can be fun!
