“Being the Nice Guy”

All my life I’ve tried to be the nice guy.
All my life I’ve wondered why.
It never made me fortune,
It never made me famous,
It never got me laid.
It never got me anything.

I’ve wondered why I couldn’t just be naughty.
I’ve wondered why I couldn’t just be rude.
I’ve wondered why I couldn’t just be greedy.
I’ve wondered were I’d be if I just lived to benefit me.

Today I know why I’ve always been the nice guy.
It’s because of Angels Like You.
Though your wings may have been stained black years ago.
Though your halo shattered into a million pieces,
Each shard falling over you and cutting the wounds,
That bled and still bleeds in so many rivers.
Each Angel so like you yet never as unique as you.

Your legs knocked out from under you,
Crawling on the ground, needing something to pick you up.
To lift you back up to your feet,
Though I’ve only managed to lift you to your knees.
I know I’ve done it cause I’ve see the smiles.

Smiles which meant so much to me,
Smiles formed because of me.
Smiles that made me smile in my own dejection.
Smiles that remind me of how you never met me with rejection.

You only need one reason to be nice.
And usually that’s because it makes you feel well inside.
But Only when its you my Angel.
You are my reason, my only one.
The one whom I find matters most.
The one who doesn’t see me as just a ghost.

Angel, did you know?
If I were on the brink of death right this moment.
This very instant in time.
That all I’d want was to see your smile,
Though your eyes might be brimming with tears,
Though your lips might be trembling so,
That smiles all I’d want just so you know.

Because of that smile, I’m never letting go.
Of being the nice guy.
