The Company fielded a formidable force in Vesper this eve, which was just as well as the other Union forces were looking a little sparse.
Even though once again we had to do without the services of skirmishers such as Raven and Keres and our foremost arcanist Valentine, we still had a balanced mix of archers and shieldfighters as well as Mercy, one of Kas's apprentices recently returned to Cove.
The men... And Mercy looked up for the challenge ahead. They knew as well as I that the Militia would be looking to build on their previous success at the Customs building but I could tell by the determination on their faces that Vesper's Militia wouldn't have things all their own way this night.
The Company looked mean and hungry for battle. I dunno about Esca's lot... But they scared the crap out of me.
The Company manned the barricaded bridge between the Customs building and the Marsh Hall inn, with the remaining Union forces in reserve. Rai' was here, fighting for the Swaggers. I worried for her safety. I worried a little too about how I'd handle leading the men, fighting to the best of my ability and keeping her safe. Dunno what I'd do if I lost her.
Fortunately there was little time to dwell on such things. The Vesper Militia began it's assault. Magery crackled through the air and one or two of our guys went down but our arrows and bolts took a terrible toll on the Vesperians. The order to rush them rang out and we were amongst them hacking and slashing, driving the Militia back to their accursed island before regrouping to await their next attack.
The second attack went less well. Maybe my concerns for Railen's safety we're preying on my mind as my order to charge may have been a little premature. We caught the Vesperians still forming up for their assault and made some early headway. Indeed if Devante had committed the reserves we would have pushed the Militia back again, but he did not and The Company had to make a fighting withdraw under heavy fire.
Now we were on the offensive. We needed that island back. We couldn't lose another. The full compliment of Union forces charged headlong into the Militia defences and after fierce fighting drove them back once more. Devante gave the order to defend the inn so we set up our defences inside the building as best we could but the Vesper Militia's counterattack soon ousted us, the air fizzing with wizardry and the ground scorched by fire elementals.
We had one last chance before nightfall to retake the inn or risk losing only the third engagement of the campaign. Keres by now had shook himself from his slumber and was eager to get in on the action and boy did he let us know it in his own unique way.
What happened next was a joy to behold. We stormed the inn. Every red clad Vesperian seemed to take aim at Keres while the rest of us cut mercilessly through their ranks. It was over in seconds. The Vesper Militia defeated and ejected from the inn. As I caught my breath after the frenzied attack I looked around. Railen was safe and unharmed. Our Union allies were all on their feet. In fact so were all The Company... Apart from Keres! Hoh!
Seems his trumpet blowin' caught up with 'im but he played a key part in the victory nonetheless.
If ye donated yer coins ter the coffers sign below... I was too weary to note yer down.Another... Epic Covian Victory.
For Cove and for The Company!
