And I wouldn't think the selling of artifacts would ruin the atmosphere, just do what Moraine said, that's a pretty nifty loophole !

Obviously if the Auctioner is like 'Seelin dis arti has 20% EL AR SEE and liek +2 stam its 1337!!11oneoneone' then that would be pretty disasterous

I think that selling such '1337' items could create another place of interest for the criminal element: the black market. Having this, regular players like soldiers or civs (hell, or even churchies) could come disguised and sell/buy such stuff. More to RP! Of course, with common sense at all times.
