The Covian honour guard stood before the finely crafted yew wood casket awaiting the arrival of the guardsmen from Yew. Boots shined and halberds gleamed as the Covians waited for Captain Dart and his men to line up before them.
Waywatchers had reported Vesperian troop movements along the route to Minoc's portal and so it was decided that two mixed columns of guardsmen would set out from the Cove, one being a decoy, the other escorting the remains of Captain Dart's wife. Surely even the Vesperians would nay stoop so low as to attack a funeral procession?
The first detachment moved out under the watchful eye of Captain Hoagie whilst the second unit mainly comprising of Grenadiers and Besiegers would escort the casket along the road to Minoc and the portal to Yew.
Just as the second unit readied to move out stragglers from the decoy unit made there way into Cove reporting an unprovoked attack by the forces of Vesper. With the road to Yew reportedly being watched also there was nothing for it other than to make a dash for the Minoc portal. Whatever happened the allied Covian and Yewish forces would be outnumbered and at a disadvantage.
Fierce fighting took place along the Minoc road as Covian and Yewman stood and fell side by side under the cowardly Vesperian assault. It was a close run thing but ultimately the honour guard was routed as the casket of Tanya Dart was consumed by flames and wytchery.
Once the full forces of Cove and Yew had rallied the counterattack began only to find the Vesperians had fled the field, taking with them the remnants of the casket and the remains of Captain Dart's dead wife. What kind of a person could stoop so low as to ignore a ceasefire and defile the dead...
A Vesperian that's who!
