*A sealed letter from the Avatarian church of Britain lies on the table at the Preceptor's table*

Your eminence, Templar Preceptor Hugo of Rothermere, of the Covian Church

It is with my great regret that I must send you this letter with the help of the underground of Britain. I expect you do not know how this letter came into your sealed office, nor will I tell you. All you must know, is that we, the Clergy of the Avatarian Church of Britain, a few days ago sent a package with vital information about the survival of the Church towards cove. It was escorted by five Templars and the package was held by a young magistrate of Britain, Dorian Eclarius. Two days ago we recieved word that the escort had been attacked en route to Cove in the middle of the swamp just south of Altmere.
The five Templars had been slain in the swamp but there has been know signs of the magistrate. Our wise clerics found evidence that a portal had been created within the swamp, and yesterday we recived a pigeon from Dorian Eclarius.
It seems the pigeon was near death on it's journey towards us, and it should be. It flew all the way from Ilshenar and the Avatar knows how to Britain. All we know now, from the short letter attached to the pigeon, that Dorian Elcarius is in an Undead Keep east of the Shrine of Compassion in Ilshenar. That is all we know.
We order you to send a detachment of Militia guards commanded by a member of your Templar order. Words of this must not reach ears outside the church, therefore. Disguise the mission as a normal patrol lead by a squire. Make sure it is a squire you trust. Also send Church Sentinels with him to make sure that there are others that know of the real mission. Without the knowledge of the Guards, they must find the magistrate and bring him home safely with the package, if he still has it. Beware that the attackers can still be in the fort.
I do not have to point of the importance of this task, and I trust that you, our good ally of the Covian Church, will proceed with the means necersarry to complete it. The package MUST reach Cove and the magistrate should hopefully be alive when he arrives. Make sure to gather evidence on the group of attackers. We must learn about this enemy.

May the Avatar ben with you,

Signed by
Arch Bishop Thomar Dean

Her intention, when Veldrin passed through the church doors, was not to complete a mission for Mathus Gray. But he was there when she lowered her head in respect for the church and sat nearby to meditate. And when he initiated conversation, it was polite and educational. But when conversation had passed, his presence changed, and his friendly expression became somehow tainted. He asked Veldrin for a favor.

The drow left the church and approached Sergeant Arc. She explained the matter to him, and shortly after, the pair arrived at the barracks to gather militiamen for a quest. Regular ShadowHand, Corporal Valiro, Regular Deibeau, Recruit Jevionia, and Recruit Valentine lined up next to Veldrin neatly, awaiting the Sergeant's instruction. Arc summoned Veldrin to announce the situation. Quickly gathering herself, she stood forward and turned. Hesitating not a second, she spoke.  "A package vas sent from church to church a few days ago. Zhe man who carried it vas accompanied by a convoy of Templars. Zhat package never reached its destination. Zhe Templar's bodies vere found in zhe svamp north of here. Zhe courier vas novhere to be found; he is suspected captured."

A rouse of shock and confusion resounded in whispers and gasps. Veldrin paused one moment before continuing. "Zhe church received a message by carrier pigeon zhat the courier may be alive, held vizhin zhe confines of zhe Undead Keep east of zhe Compassion Shrine in Ilshenar. Ve are to retrieve zhe courier and bring him back here." She couldn't resist a smirk as she moved back in line, enjoying the disbelief and even fear of the other militiamen. Sergeant Arc took command again, and opened a portal to the moongate, which they would use to arrive at the Compassion Shrine not minutes later.

Marching a nearly straight line east from the shrine to the keep, the guardsmen slew the few lesser undead creatures that wandered just outside. Encounting reanimated corpses, powerful lich lords, and cursed mummies, the group stormed the undead keep, searching through each room to find the supposed courier. They finally located him in a small bedroom-like area, simpering and huddling underneath an old bed with a rotting mattress.

The man quickly began rambling about the attack and how the Templars were killed. He explained that a mage had opened a moongate and thrown the package into it, but he couldn't remember where the moongate went to. He began sputtering and rambled on a bit more, while guardsmen tried to calm him down, but at that point, a lich appeared from nowhere inside the room and began flinging spells randomly. The courier was injured and crumpled to the floor, scurrying under the bed again. In a few moments the threat was again neutralized.

"Perhaps we should have this little chat when were not in the middle of an undead fort, eh?" Arc pointed out helpfully. He was quickly agreed with. Before we could move however, Sir Hugo burst into the room, followed by a legion of undead. Annoyed with the Templar's carelessness, the guardsmen dispatched the undead creatures and shuffled the courier along with them. Sir Hugo brushed passed them and mounted his horse, going about his own way and bashing at walking corpses and skeletons at his leisure.

"Vhat should I call you," Veldrin muttered flatly, glaring sharply at the man who had caused this much trouble. "Dorian," the man mustered between whimpers. Satisfied with being able to fit a name to the face, they hurried on. Unfortunately, Dorian sustained another injury, and was no longer able to walk. "Pick him up!" someone shouted. Veldrin didn't care who. She knelt down and lifted the man with some effort. Although a mage and a woman, she had trained enough to be considered strong and able by most men.

"Get him out of here!" Arc yelled as the group was continuously swarmed by rotting, walking creatures. "Don't wait up for me!"

With the rest of the group covering her back, Veldrin moved as fast as she could with the man in her arms, hurrying to the moongate at the Compassion shrine. As soon as she reached her destination, she hurried to the barracks, rushing up the stairs and kicking the door open. Reaching the bed and laying him onto the mattress and sheet, Veldrin finally got a clear look of Dorian. He was more injured than she had originally recognized, and not all of the injuries were fresh. She could tell by the way his chest was heaving that he did not have long. He began muttering obscure phrases.

"Bird..." he muttered. "The truth is always seen by a bird from above."

"I don't understand," Veldrin stated, watching the man without compassion. She heard the door open, and her ear twitched. Arc was standing nearby. "He is talking in riddles," she explained, turning back to Dorian. Arc nodded and returned downstairs to instruct the waiting guardsmen outside.

The man muttered more, but much of it was lost or too incoherent to understand. Before long he was dead. As Arc returned, the two carried the body to the church and left it for the Templars to take care of. The package, it seemed, was still lost.

(This is a private letter from Veldrin to Arc. This is NOT In-Character Knoweldge.)

A sealed letter lie folded on Sergeant Arc's desk in the Arcane Tower. It was half covered by a large stack of books - enough for it to be discreet and yet still noticed by the Arcane Sergeant. Once unfolded, the lettering inside instantly stands out as foreign. Trained eyes might see that it is written in the drow language.

Sergeant Arc,

I have written this letter in drow scribe so that even if it fell into unintended hands, only you will be able to read it. I have enclosed the riddle given to me by Dorian the courier, and as you requested I left it out of my report. The riddle was quite obscure, but it was hardly anything I couldn't handle.

The truth is always seen by a BIRD from above.

For every man that got a few extra ten powers of Py-Ramid.

The only one forest that had been of wood will show honor be it even in the dread land Ilshenar.

Only those who the fine power of Hedge are given to may be the one Ze.

As you heard yourself, the man kept repeating and pointing out that there were four letters in the Britannian word "bird." Four. And every four words in the riddle starting from the second line gives you this: "For got ten Py-Ramid. Forest of Honor in Ilshenar. The Hedge May Ze." Obviously these are pointing out locations: The Forgotten Pyramid in Malas, the forest near the Honor Shrine in Ilshenar, and the hedge maze near Britain. I was lead to believe that the package is in one of these three locations. And as you wished, we are the ones to find that package. This should earn us ample favor from the church, if they know the concept of gratitude.

I found the package in Ilshenar, in the forest of Honor. It was shoved into a chest of drawers in the upstairs of a forsaken Tavern deep in the woods. I made a small sketch of the scenery.

Rotting food had been left on the steps of the inn, which led me upstairs to inspect the rooms above. One of the rooms looked like it had been used recently, while the rest of the tavern was in unhealthy disarray. More food was scattered across the floor, next to a burning candle. In the dim light, I saw a scrap of parchment on top of a chest of drawers. Inside the drawers I found a small box - exactly what we had been searching for.

The original package seemed to contain quite droll documents, detailed about the Avatarian religion and matters of the Church. But there were other notes inside that spoke of darker things. Grave deeds. A conspiracy against the Covian Church. Three names are mentioned in these notes. Mathus Gray, someone named Magus, and another who is referred to as "The Snake." There is one more person involved in this, but he simply signs his letters with the letter M.

These letters speak of the incident with the Mayoress of Cove, and a plot to assassinate Sir Hugo. It is no wonder the Church wants this package so direly. The letters are inside the package, and I will be making copies of them. I recommend that you examine these letters closely. There is a conspiracy at work here, and of course you are the first and last person I will inform them of.

That is all that I know for now. But might I add, Sergeant, that you run a fine Arcane Company.
