This whole week UO has been really weird. A strange lag of some sort. When I play I am able to move like 1-5 squares before the game freezes for a while and then I can walk for the same amount of squares before the same thing happens again. Some days it has been more playable but still not enough as it freezes too often.

I doubt it is the connection that is the issue here. I've had downloads during this week (although not when I've been playing UO) that has gone in a 0.5mb/sec. It could also be a virus, though I have not found any on the computer. Or the firewall has been messed with... I am not sure. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Download a little gadget called Hijackthis and run a test. Then publish the entire report it creates here, and I'll see what I can do. Smiley

I have had similar problems and if I am not mistaken then the lag is ONLY with UO, right?

Backup your desktop files and then delete the original ones. This resets all your settings and macros. For some reason it should fix the lag. Also, circle of transpiracy plays a big part here. I believe it might be vid card related as well, but that has not yet been confirmed.

I too had a similar problem - Kaz told me to do what he has stated here but it'd work for a while then start again!

The problem turned out to be  a build up of dust in the exhaust port on my laptop.

You using a laptop Graz?

I just bought a tin of compressed air and blew it all out and now everything works fine!!!

Hope you get it sorted matey!

Well, the HijackThis report doesn't contain anything useful (Meaning your PC ain't infected with anything), then I'd either clean out my PC or do a fresh install of windows or UO(Yes format your drive. Backup and reinstall everything).

That's my advice.

It's quite possible that it's not related to your internet - that is, that the client is struggling to run. This seems silly with the apparently simplistic nature of UO but because of the 8 years or cut-and-paste, the 2d and 3d together, all the housing etc., it can actually need some decent PC firepower to run. If you're using a laptop the problem could therefore be overheating. Laptops get really damn hot really damn quickly (which is why you shouldn't use them on your lap itself if you don't want to be rendered impotent Wink) so as suggested above, make sure that there's nothing blocking the heat exhaust(s) and if it's particularly dusty give it a blow/vacuum but BE CAREFUL doing that. Also, try to keep it away from other sources of heat (don't play it on top of a running desktop PC stack, or by a radiator). and use it in a well-ventilated room.

This prolly won't be of any help but you never know...

Back to playing Phoenix Wright!

A tip when opening the Laptop or computer in general...Get rid of Static electricity. One zap and it's goodbye to your hardware.

Aye ESD, Electrostatic Sensative devices (ANY electronic) should be used on NON-metalic surfaces, or with rubber/vinyl/plastic pads underthem. A few days ago we lost about 2 million in computer systems thanks to a bump that cuased a discharge... fried the computers.... and I ahd to do the freaking deliveries!!

Haha yeah. Wonder how many times you'll have to say that before people stop giving laptop-related advice.

You might try a defrag, or possibly a reformat (don't reformat unless you know what you're doing). It sounds to me like a possible memory problem or something to do with your graphics card. Whether you're using 2D or 3D can make a difference as well.

You might also want to open up your computer and just blow it out with a can of compressed air, or clean it out with your own breath and hands. You'd be surprised at what dust can do to your machine if it clumps up enough. It can insulate your different machine components and prevent the fans from cooling them off properly. It can also dampen electrical signals on your cards. I had so much dust in one part of my computer that my front USB ports didn't work! But I just cleaned out my comp by pulling inch-thick dust clumps out of corners and the ports work perfectly now.

If none of that fixes your UO, I can guarantee it will improve your PC's overall performance at least.

I have 2GB. of ram and 3.2 GHz processor, and 24MB internet. I don't lag. Or have any other hardware issues. I also have Norton.

Upgrade everything!
