Again this was something I did for OU. I really struggled to get this story out and was never happy with it.

p.s. Naughty swear word in the last line but couldn't put it any other way. Shocked

Lost Soul

As they parked up in the driveway, the house seemed as foreboding as ever to Danny. He hadn’t been anywhere near the old place in years and it felt like he was returning to the scene of a crime, where he was the victim.

Danny and his companion Harry get out of the car and walked up the path to the front door. The house seems to scowl at Danny as he approaches, almost as if it remembered him. Well I remember you he thought.

The reason for Danny’s return was to help his great friend, spiritualist and mentor Harry find out what was driving the young couple that lived there crazy. As if Danny didn’t know already.

Danny knew the Sharpe’s who lived in the big old house. He had gone to school with both Jack and Lisa. He remembered trying to put Jack off from buying the place twelve months ago but Jack didn’t put much stall in ghouls, goblins and ghosts. Maybe he did now.

Jack and Lisa meet their guests at the front door and welcomed them in. After the hellos and introductions were out of the way Jack and Lisa explained to them the strange occurrences that have been so unnerving. Harry thanks them and suggests they go out for a stroll while he and Danny take a look around.

As they walked from room to room all the memories that Danny had kept hidden for the past seven years came kicking and screaming to the fore. As Danny opened his old bedroom door there seemed to be a glitch in the ether.

He can see himself as a child, desperately trying to get to sleep. The TV and bedside lamp are on in a vain attempt to ward off the evil, which he knew would come. His parents enter the room. They are just going out for some supper and won’t be long. Bruno would look after him, but the Alsatian’s eyes looked as fearful as Danny’s as it lay down at the foot of his bed.

The temperature drops. Danny knows what’s coming next but he can’t stop himself from replaying it. He sees himself get up an open the bedroom door. Bruno follows but only to the threshold. The child Danny carries on along the hallway drawn onward be some mysterious force.

He goes down the few stairs on to the small landing outside the bathroom. As the moonlight catches him through the tall window young Danny becomes rooted to the spot. There’s something behind him. Don’t turn round.

Then it brushes his shoulder. A pair of dangling, ashen feet confront the boy as he spins round. Danny looks up. A horribly contorted face with a grotesquely protruding tongue sneers back.

Danny bolts up the stairs at the other side of the landing and crashes through the bathroom door slamming it behind him. Wet with fear the youngster catches his breath. Although no monster had followed him in he sensed that he was no better off in the bathroom than out on the landing.

As his eyes become accustomed to the dark Danny can make out a figure in the bath. A woman’s figure. Mum he thought. He scrambles up from the floor to turn on the light.

What’s she doing in the dark? Why hasn’t she gone out?

Too late the bulb illuminates the room and Danny’s very soul fills with dread. There sitting before him in a bath of crimson was a young woman with dark red hair and bone white skin. She opened her eyes, two bottomless opals fix onto the youngster holding his stare for a moment. Then her terrible laughter mocks him.

A hand placed on his shoulder brings Danny back to the present with a start.
“Memories?” Harry asks.
Danny answers with a nod.
“Good or bad?”
“What do you think?” Danny answers more sharply than he meant to.
“You’ll have to put it behind you tonight. There is work to be done in this house.” Harry said looking around.
“I know.”

It was far from the first time Harry and Danny had done this type of work. Harry through his mediumship could connect with trapped souls and together he and Danny would help them into the light. But as Danny developed he seemed to become a beacon from which God’s light would emanate, helping Harry to re-unite these lost souls with their loved ones.

As their work begins Danny can see the spectral shapes come forth in his minds eye, one by one into the light. The two friends are feeling drained as the last souls approach. One seems familiar to Danny. As she gets nearer he can make out her sodden red hair and ivory skin.

Just go into light.

As she passes Danny she stops and turns, her black eyes piercing into his very being. Then the laughter. The tormentor of his youth mocking him once more.

Without warning Danny shuts down. The great light is extinguished. The look of terror on her face fades from his mind and makes him warm inside as he breaks off his connection with Harry.

Harry comes out of his trance with a gasp.
“What have you done?” He stammers still trying to align himself and regain his bearings.
Danny looks his friend dead in the eye.
“Fuck her.”
“But she will be trapped here for ever.”
Fuck her. So am I. Danny thought.
