I long ago took an oath to slap anyone and everyone who drudges up that rubbish as a guide on subscriptions. That website is based entirely on conjecture =) We dont know the true UO numbers, and probably never will because EA doesnt want anyone to know how badly its doing. At the very least it ight affect their stocks, which they arent going to risk just to appease us.

In Character Boards / In Character Board / The Covian Game of Blockade!
|
on: September 12, 2007, 05:45:24 pm
|
I have recently adapted an old board game that i thought others might enjoy. Its a tactical game called blockade. Its easy to learn and can be quite competitive between two acomplished players. The rules are as follows... The game of blockade is played on a rectangular playing area, generally with an even long side and an odd smaller side. The size of the pitch is up to you, but larger than 11x16 or smaller than 7x10 may cause trouble. Normally it is played on a 9x14 area. The game is played with two sets of bagballs, a starting tile, and a token. The starting tiles are placed 2 paces in from the short side of the field, in the middle, with an even number of spaces between them. The aim of the game is to get your token from your own start tile to your opponents start tile. Each turn you move your tile one pace north, south, east or west. The token cannot move diagonally, nor can it move onto bagballs. After you have moved your tile, you place a bagball anywhere on the field you like. You must however, always leave an open route to your home tile. If two tiles meet each other on the field, one may jump over the other to the tile behind, assuming there is a free space behind the token being jumped. If there is not, then the token whos turn it is must move out of the way. Further rules: - When starting the game, the learning or least experienced player goes first. Barring that, the challenger goes first (If someone plays and wins, and then plays a new contestant, that new-comer goes first) - On the first turns, the players may not place a bagball directly next to the starting tile, either next to or diagonally next to it. - The bandages are out of bounds, however if there are space constraints then they may be used as game-space. Wagers: Normally wagers are based on how many tiles the loser has lost by. So if the bet is set at 10 crowns, and the loser is one tile away from winning when his opponent wins, then the wager is still 10 crowns. However is the loser has 5 or even 12 tiles left to go before reaching the opponents start tile, then the wager is multiplied by that number of tiles to 50 crowns or 120 crowns respectively. So be careful with your wagers. Sets: Blockade sets are made up of 15 bagballs each. (I use 15 facing one direction and 15 facing the other to make them more distinguished.) 2 peices of cloth for the start tile (Dyed the same colour as the bagballs.) 1 peice of cloth for the token (Dyed a slightly darker or lighter shade of the colour of the bagballs, so that it does not stack with the start tile.) Have fun playing Blockade! - Signed Salick Kaysen

Patrol around Cove Leader - Salick Kaysen, Junior Attending - Ffodos, Recruit Rhonwen Lwyd, Recruit Garand, Scout
Led a quick patrol around cove. The town wall has fallen into severe dis-repair, and we shall need to gather new materials to repair it. Checking on Altmere, everything seemed fine, and we had the recruits set the beds right and clean the place up a little. Onward to the graveyard, where we thinned the ranks of undead a fair bit. When all seemed well and quiet, we headed back to Cove. A thousand coins were recovered from the graveyard for the stores.

Pending my scout trials, i decided to get off on the right foot and take a few men hunting for some horned leather, to replenish the scout stores. After getting Falconheart to attend by promising him a share of the gold for the Dragoon piles, we gathered at the barracks and set off for the dungeon.
Heading in slowly, we were confronted by a wounded dragon who was quickly dispatched. We headed west to find ourselves some drakes and giant serpeants. Heading to the east side we bumped into Hoagie who was dropping off a new recruit for us. He'd managed to get himself and the recruit eaten by a dragon. After a quick bit of healing we continued on, new guy in tow.
We battled right to the middle of the cave where we slew many a dragon. Then, stopping to shove some of the leather into an ant bag, we headed to the back of the cave to slay a few more drakes. Finnally we found a fallen shrine surrounded by water elementals. A quick prayer and a few arrows later, we moved back toward the entrance. A good hunt with few casualties, and a fine haul for the Covian stores.
In Attendance: Salick Kaysen - Junior Guardsman Falconheart - Junior Guardsman Drachir - Regular Scout Perrin - Watchman Ffodos - Guardsman Recruit
Hauled in: 29000 Gold. 10,000 Went to the Dragoons. 5000 To the troops. Rest to the scout stores. 60 Spined leather. 290 Barbed Leather. 712 Horned Leather.

No lagging paperwork to re-write, this one is fresh off the presses! Today i set out to complete my trials, looking to put together three new traps to be used in battle, or for defense. The first is called the Scorpion Box. A set of venemous scorpion tails are installed into a crate on a string-trigger. When buried in the ground and someone steps on the trap, their foot and leg is stabbed by the tails, giving them a heavy dose of poison. The second is called a Barrel Trap. Unimaginative name but it will have to do. By connecting a set of bolts to a barrel, spring-loaded, i have crated a trap that could be used in the re-building of our town wall. When someone attempts to climb over the wall, they will trigger the barrel trap, which will shoot out fifty bolts in all directions, impaling the intruder. On second thought, the trap could also be created to only fire bolts in ONE direction...no need for people on OUR side of the wall to get impaled... The third trap is one i have ben using for some time allready, but have never submitted the designs for wide-spread use. As a scout, it is often nessecary to escape a much more heavily armoured foe, and the shadows are not always forthcoming. By taking some of the key side-nails from a crate, and then filling it with sharp objects, you have a crate-trap. Thrown down behind you during an escape, or used in blockades, it severly holds up an enemy as they traverse the dangerous ground. (OOC The crate-trap is actually quite useful to use in-game, whereas the other two are fiction. Fill a crate with three or four smaller crates, use it to block off a doorway or strategic bottleneck. When an enemy chops the crate down (instead of trying to move them all by hand) they are simply multiplying their work. Also, scouts can destroy the crates themselves from the shadows to hold up an enemy. (/OOC) - Signed Salick Kaysen

Salick plonked back down into the writing chair, it groaning underneath him. Salick spoke to the chair. "Yes i know, id rather be elsewhere too, stop groaning and lets get on with it..." Having brought some fresh inks this time and some non-yellowed parchment, Salick got to work on the next report. ----------For the second part of my Trials i was instucted to march a contingent of covians out to the Altmere outpost, to check on the men there and re-supply them. We set off in the afternoon with a pack horse full of supplies, lead by our Recruit. We made good time, although the northern road seems overrun with bandits. This did not bode well for the outpost... Arriving after numerous ambushes, pack horse and suplies still intact, we opened the doors to find the outpost in tatters and totally deserted. Their was nothing in the bade except for a few unmade beds and some shoddy masonry. The healers had stuck around, but everyone else had vanished. Either they defected or were killed by the bandits, we did not find out. The outpost was then fortified and defended. I sent off a few of the men into the nearby desert on a special task, they were to fetch me a bagful of scorpion tails, to be used in the third section of my trial, the trap making. When they returned we were finnally set upon again by bandits, making a last attempt at keeping the outpost unoccupied so they could continue their criminal ways uninterupted. They were dealt with. Just as we were about to leave, a troop of orcs from cove attacked us! Word travels far it seems, and there were heavy casualties on both sides. The orcs were eventually chased off and the survivors helped the wounded, and soon enough we were all back on duty guarding the post once more. It is now fully stocked and hopefully soon to be re-staffed. Attending: Salick Kaysen Mela Arkay Ihiniar Tel'var Adrien Garnier Hoagie Desmond Krieger Demarian Tel'var - Signed Salick Kaysen. Salick sat down in his writing chair. Old scars in his thighs pulled taught and he winced slightly. Dragging his arm across the table, he scraped shafts, feathers and bow strings to the floor. Reaching up a shelf above, he pulled down a very dusty tome and blew dust off its spine. 'Watchman Trial' it read. He opened the tome and began to leaf through forgotten paintings of another life, before his kidnap and torture. He sat back in the chair, looking to the roof for inspiration, finding a small spider sitting in a half-spun web. The spider had lived there for three years now, and had never finished its web, Salick had no idea why. "Well, for Avatar's sake, ONE of us should finish someone in our lifetime." Leaning forward again, he slowly prepared a fresh peice of parchment and began scratching with what was left in his dried out ink-pot. ----------------'I had best make this short, the inks all but gone. A long time ago now i lead a troop of covians to the Great Pyramid near Umbra. After scouting the surroundind area and managing to find what looked like an entrance at the base of the pyramid, i returned to cove to gather the troops. I led them back to the nearby archeologists camp before approaching the pyramid proper. We climbed its peak to find a safer and less treacherous entrance inside. Descending the halls on the inside we came across mummies and all sorts of undead fiends. Dispatching of these with ease, we moved deeper into the bowels of the great pyramid, until at the very bottom we found a great Sphinx. The battle was drawn out, the creature made seemingly of stone. With adept healing and good formation, we dispatched the Sphing and those undead who came to aid the great beast. Seemingly angered by the great beast slain, the pyramids inhabitants led a counter-attack with zeal. Fighting bolt and blade to the northern wall, i quickly identified the hidden entrance and we made a hasty retreat into the daylight outside, where the ghouls were un-eager to follow.'------------- Salick leant back in his chair, convinced that this was the most paperwork he has possibly ever done in one sitting. The spider above him had captured a wasp, which was buzzing furiously as its captor circled cautiously, waiting to strike. Salick began arranging a few drawings of the events at the pyramid and stood to take the parchment to the Barracks. In Character Boards / In Character Board / When it rains... (Part 3)
|
on: December 14, 2006, 08:18:39 pm
|
It was pouring with rain as Salick crossed the courtyard. After escaping from Semis and his guards, he had moved quickly to find where they had been keeping the woman he loved. A few quick turns had led him out here. It must have been a castle or a keep of some sorts, to have an internal courtyard, but Salick saw no gate or portcullis which might suggest an exit. The candlelight in a small stone window flickered as five men ran past. Salick saw they were heading for the door he just exited from, and he took to the shadows in a corner of the courtyard. The rain was freezing, but it soothed his wounds. He judged that three of his ribs were broken, and his arms and legs had many deep cuts in them, half healed since Jerod's last visit. Taking the five men on would not be a good plan. The five of them dashed out into the courtyard with lanterns, and began searching. "He must have come this way, find him!" One of them shouted. Salick needed to act quickly. Picking up a stone from his feet, he threw it up and across the courtyard, smashing a window on the far side. "He's into the main hall! He's heading for the door! Do NOT let him escape!" The captain shouted, as four of the men ran back into the keep. The captain remained, guarding the window and continuing a search of the courtyard. A lightning bolt hit nearby, and a few tiles fell from the siding of the keep, smashing on the floor. The guard spun round and instantly spotted Salick, but it was too late. Salick picked up one of the tile shards and flung it at the captain, embedding it in his neck. He now knew where the door and the remaning guards were, and headed back inside, after relieving the captain of his belongings. As he stepped inside, one the men turned a corner. "Captain! We could find no sign of him!" Salick improvised a quick voice like that he had heard the captain use. "I saw his shadow in one of the courtyard windows, he must be headed for her cell and the rest of the guards, lets go!" The guard passed him, not looking at his face as he hurried off down the corridor. Salick followed him, loading the captains small crossbow. When they entered a room after a few extra turns, Salick was shocked that any man could stand upright in a room that smelt so bad. Julie's body lay broken in a corner of the room, she had been killed weeks ago. Three other girls bodies lay nearby, one of them faintly crying. Semis must have been torturing the girls to make Salick think Julie was still alive. "Captain?" One of the eight guards in the room looked up and saw immediatly that Salick was not the captain, and began to draw his sword. Salick pulled his crossbow and grabbed the guard he had followed here, and pointed it at the mans head. "Lower your weapons! NOW!" Salick shouted. The guards, looking nervously from one to another, slowly layed their swords on the floor. Salick began backing out of the room. The cold metal of a crossbow bolt touched his neck. "Such a shame about the girl. Turns out she wasnt anywhere near as much sport as you tend to be. Died in her second sitting with Jerod, such a shame. I sent the men to take these ones from the Abbey, grape pickers i think. They were such fitting stand in's, scream just as well as your little lady did." "Semis you bastard" Salick kept a hold on the guard in front of him. "And so now. Ive taken something priceless from you, just as you took something priceless from me, all those years ago." "Id hardly call it priceless. As i remember i got a fairly -good- price for it" "Oh im so glad for you. Drop the weapon! You know she's dead so i guess my fun is over, but im sure i can make you last at least another month or two. Drop it" Salick tried the only move he could think of. Pulling the guard closer to him, he spun toward Semis. The crossbow fired and cut a large chunk in Salick's neck. It did not go in however, and went straight into the head of the guard Salick had been holding. Salick stabbed Semis in the stomach with the crossbow bolt, and kicked the door behind him closed, tapping the latch into place with his toe. Semis gasped and backed to the wall. Salick followed him there, hand still on the crossbow trigger. "I think i'll last a bit longer than that. You however..." Salick looked down at the wound in Semis' stomach, Semis was trying to pull the bolt out, but Salick pressed on the crossbow, driving the bolt deeper. "...most certainly wont". Salick angled the crossbow, pointing the bolt up and inside Semis' ribcage, and pulled the trigger. The sound of Semis' internal organs being torn apart by the force of the bolt was interrupted by only a slight gasp from Semis' throat, as blood began to well up out of his mouth and down his chin. Salicked dropped Semis to the floor and ran. The guards behind him were using the table in the room to bash open the door. Despite its heavy frame Salick doubted it would take eight men long to break the door down. Heading back out into the courtyard, Salick lept through the window he had smashed, taking out a ring of keys he had taken from the captain earlier. He was indeed, as the captain had said, in the main hall. A large set of double doors were at one end, and Salick made a run for them. His broken ribs were starting to make his breath short, and he needed to escape and hide before the guards could give chase. This wasnt going to happen however, as four guards appeared at the other end of the hall just as Salick was trying to unlock the main door. He quickly tried key after key on the chain as the men ran down the hall, knocking over chairs and candelabras as they went. The sixth key produced a click and Salick flung the door open and hobbled off into the night. Outside was a dismal sight. The keep was in a clearing, with no cover for a good hundred yards. Salick made for the tree line as quickly as he could, but the men were faster, and keen to avenge their employer. The first of them caught up to Salick and raised his sword to strike. Salick dived to the side but the blade nicked the back of his leg, almost hamstringing him. Salick fell to the floor, and the guard recovered to deal a killing blow. As he raised the sword over his head, a crossbow bolt hit him square in the neck. The weight of his sword pulled him backwards, and the guard fell to the floor, dead. The other three however were not far behind. One of them was struck in the arm by another bolt and Salick looked up and behind himself to the treeline. Mela was re-loading her crossbow as Hoagie charged toward him, longsword at the ready. He all but cleaved in half the first guard, who was caught by surprise and trying to remove a bolt from his arm. The third guard tried to tackle Hoagie, but fell flat to the floor as Hoagie sidestepped him. Hoagie turned to deal with the guard when the fourth came up behind him and grabbed him in a bear hug. The two stood and wrestled as the other guard regained himself and readied his weapon against Hoagie. Salick reached out with his foot and kicked Hoagie square in the shins. Hoagie cursed as he was taken off balance and began to fall. He slid out of the guards hold and fell to the floor. The guard looked at his empty arms for a second and then down at Hoagie, holding his shin on the floor. A second later he was struck in the chest by a crossbow bolt from Mela, who was now running toward them, crossbow reloading. The final guard began to run back toward the keep, shouting for the rest of the household guards. Salick picked up a crossbow from the fallen guard and shot at the man from the floor. His bolt was followed by another from Mela, perferating both the mans lungs. His cries stopped, and he managed another few bounds toward the house before he seemed to realise that he wasnt able to shout any more, and that this was probably a bad thing. "That hurt you bastard!" Hoagie cursed as he got to his feet. "Worked well though" Mela said as she reached the two of them. "Good Job Salick" Salick managed a small chuckle before holding his ribs in pain. Hoagie took a spare cloak from his pack and the two helped Salick to his feet. "What the hell took you so long" Salick managed to whisper, a cocky grin on his face. "No point in saving someone who cant be bothered to do some of the saving himself" Mela jibed, holding Salick up by the arm. "Aye! You are only a watchman after all, your expendable you know" Hoagie chuckled. "Ill try to remember that next time" Salick said, as the three of them stumbled off toward the treeline. Three men entered the cell with a casual demeanour. They stood, arms crossed, armed with crossbows and blades. A fourth man entered behind them.
“Well, Mister Kaysen, I see you’re still alive. I for one am most impressed”
Salick didn’t stir, and Semis gestured to one of the guards, who proceeded to break two more of Salick’s ribs with his boot. Salick gasped suddenly with an intake of pain, burning through his lungs and onto the freshly broken bones.
“Come now, I can hardly trade banter with you if you’re feigning sleep.”
“Cant trade what you’ve none of, Semis.” Salick coughed, spitting a glob of blood to land at Semis’ shoes.
“Ah there’s that old Kaysen wit. How i've missed it.”
“Missed it? You’ve been here every day for three weeks. I’ve got the bruises to show for it.”
“Ah well, you took something…many things…that were most precious to me, Kaysen. Killing you, although very enjoyable, would then leave me back where I started. At least keeping you alive I can entertain myself thoroughly.”
Salick lay on the floor of the cell, watching Semis. His bow-arm had been broken and re-set, as had both his legs. His chest was more scar than flesh, and his face was a collection of bruises and scars, cuts both fresh and scabbed over.
“I’m sorry, did you want something?”
“Hah! Of course, of course. Straight to business, indeed. I’ve come to watch, of course. Jerod!”
A small masked man entered the room. He carried with him a large tool box, which he set out on the table next to Salick. Opening it he raised an eyebrow.
“What is it? Start already. He owes me more blood” Semis said impatiently
“Of course milord. I seem to have misplaced a small and large blade. Most strange. Maybe I left them with that guardsman lass down the hall. No matter.” Jerod said. Salick remained motionless, staring at Semis.
“What? No curses? Witty comebacks? You know I've got your girl down the hall, as you’ve no doubt heard of late. She screams much better than you do, she does it...what’s the word…willingly! Every scream Jerod here draws out of you is hours of work, disappointing and satisfying at the same time. But she…she has a set of lungs on her. Anyhow, enough talk. I don’t care in whom you’ve misplaced your blades Jerod. Begin.”
Jerod moved towards Salick, a cork-screw like implement at the ready.
“You know Jerod, you really should pay more attention to your blades and their uses.” Salick whispered quietly. “Oh yes?” Jerod leaned closer to hear Salick's barely audible words. “For example, do you know that a small blade broken in half in brickwork and bent makes a workable lock pick?”
Jerod eyes widened but for a moment, before Salick thrust forward a large knife, hidden under his ragged loincloth, and struck Jerod under the rib. The blade went directly into Jerod’s heart. Salick would have twisted the blade, but he needed it at the moment. Savagely withdrawing the blade from Jerod’s form, he threw the blade straight into the eye of one of the guards. The other two were coming to their senses and drawing their crossbows. Salick kicked at one of their legs, and as the man fell, grabbed his crossbow and shot the second. Semis simply screamed and cowered as Salick fled the room holding his broken ribs.
As soon as Salick was gone, the remaining guard stumbled to his feet to give chase. Semis lowered his arms from his face and held a hand out, stopping the guard. His whimpers quickly turned into a savage laughter.
"Dont bother going after him, he's injured and this place is locked down entirely. Gather the other guards and meet me by the whores cell."
"Yes sir! Right away." The guard hurried out of the room and headed off in the direction opposite to where Salick had fled.
Semis left the room slowly and followed the trail of blood that indicated the turns Salick had taken.
“Well now Mister Kaysen, there’s hope for you yet”

Salick drifted through the woods silently. The rain made it easier, but it sent a chill underneath his leather that no sane man would normally abide. Drifting behind a tree, he looked around for any Loyalists, or clues of their passage. The rain had made the ground slick and washed away all tracks. He sighed and moved onward.
The crack of a branch froze him. He knew it was not his own feet, he was rarely so careless these days. Being a scout recruit had honed his skills well. A trainee was wandering down the Yewish road, headed for stonekeep. He was stooped, with a slight hurry to his walk. He was sensible enough to wish to be out of the storm.
Looking closer Salick spotted some ale and lantern fuel. This man wasn’t out of his own accord, he was fetching supplies for the roadblock Salick knew was in place this very moment.
As Salick hovered toward the man, barely touching the floor, the trainee stood still. He wasn’t totally stupid after all, but it would not help him now.
“Sorry Lad” Salick whispered in his ear as the blade went through. “Cant have you delivering that tonight, I want her alone”. The trainee gave the slightest of gasps, all but drowned out by the wind and lightning. Lowering him to the ground carefully, Salick dragged him off to the side of the road and covered him with a fallen branch.
Slowly Stonekeep began to loom up ahead, and Salick left the shadow of the road, skirting around the great meadow. Questioning a footman up at the Abbey earlier that day had revealed the duty roster for tonight, as well as the plans for a roadblock. The footman had been lucky in that the information had saved his life, and he merely lay tied and unconscious in a locked storeroom within the Abbeys walls.
Creeping alongside the tradepost, Salick saw her and let out a familiar sigh. She stood with a heavy cloak wrapped around herself, lonely manning the roadblock. Looking up and down the road, she was expecting the trainee soon. Salick fell to the shadows and merely watched, haunted by age old questions. Why had she done it? Chosen the “life” of a loyalist. He thought that they would be together always, so alike of mind, and of spirit. Yet, she chose this, over him. It had caught him off-balance entirely, and had been among the reasons he had finally fled Yew, his former home.
A ruckus further up the road drew Salick from his thoughts. A footman was running down the road, trying to scream above the storm. He was losing. Reasoning that the trainee must have been discovered, Salick determined that this was the time to leave.
There was always next week…and the week after…and then after that…
Salick sighed and retreated to the woods.
“Can’t win em all…”
“Indeed not, Mister Kaysen” Semis said, stepping from the shadows right infront of Salick. The old man had learnt some new tricks…Salick backed away cautiously.
“Taken up my traits I see? Never thought you the one…”
“Well its amazing what revenge will inspire you to do, eh?”
“Aye, well, as much as I love our little chats”. Salick began to back away.
“We have them often? Last time I remember ‘chatting’ with you was a good few years back. At the time you were fleeing with most of my most valuable possessions” Semis said, stepping after Salick.
“Aye well, you wont get them now, sold traded and….used…im afraid”
“Ah well, I thought that might be the case. Visiting your sweetheart are you? How quaint”
Salick realized he has been backing away TOWARDS stonekeep, and stopped backtracking.
“Keeping an eye out for an assassination actually, not that its any of your concern. Unless you’re here to see the new tricks I'VE picked up while I was away?” Salick slowly drew a small assassins point from his sash.
“Why, you think it would be that easy to settle old debts? I too have learnt new tricks since you departed so abruptly.”
“Aye, well, I doubt you’ve learnt as many as me, you old bastard.” Salick glanced up to the sky and judged when the next flash of lighting would occur. One of the clouds above them sparked. “And now, I must be off, so sorry to disappoint.”
The flash of lightning came, and Salick dived to the right, and into the shadows.
“Ah but you are mistaken Mister Kaysen! I HAVE learnt new tricks…”
Salick collided just then with a large cloaked and hooded man. The man hit him square in the jaw, sending him sprawling into the sopping mud. Three more men appeared from the shadows and held Salick up.
“After all…I learnt from a professional eh?”
Salick looked around at the three brutes, and then at Semis, who had a glint so cold in his eye that it about matched the revenge Salick felt he was about to be on the receiving end of.
“Well shit…”
Julie looked up from her post. The footman who had come complaining about the lights being out of fuel in the tavern, asking where the trainee was with his fuel, has gone inside the hall now. She looked up and toward the tradepost. Had she heard a cry? Maybe it was just the storm. She folded herself up deeper into the rain cloak and let her head dip again. Across the road, hidden by the wind and rain, an assasins point and covian sash lay in the mud, both stained with blood.
