On this 26th of February, as the day matriculated into the evening, Company Arcanist extraordinaire, Kas Valentine, shared some of his expertise with mercenary recruits Leander Le Blanc and Abigail Keres. The purpose being to give these aspiring Arcanist mercenaries instruction on how to harness their magic to best serve Covetown, the Baron, and the Company.
First, Kas coyly quizzed them on various scholarly material found inside their spell books, just to see how well they hath been hitting the tomes. Examples included “What is magic useful for besides healing and offense?” and “What are the 'power words' for spells that deal cold damage to foes?” Counting on fingers and thumbs, they came up with the correct answers with a little tutelage from Kas.
Kas had the recruits sprint to the Cove Gates and back -- just to get their blood flowing and to ensure their answers regarding the use of magic are crisper, more articulate, and snappier.
After the oral exam bit was done, Kas decided it was time for a little practice. The two recruits shook themselves out and presented arms, preparing for battle.
These are some sketches I’ve made from the lesson, I promise I wasn’t doodling during class, Kas!
Abigail suggested she and Leander take on Kas. He responded by saying it wasn’t quite what he had in mind, but he agreed nonetheless. All the while he was wearing a mischievous grin. Once the magically conjured barrier disappeared, the air was pervaded by bangs, fire, energy, lighting and the like. By an Avatari miracle, Leander managed to survive for quite some time. However, inevitably, both recruits had their heads face down in the dirt. Nevertheless Kas was impressed, and the recruits were overjoyed and flattered.
Out in front of the barracks Kas showed the recruits orange petals and explained the importance of poison resistance. He told the recruits, that as Arcanists, we need to remember our physical form, and understand that Arcanists can be quite breakable. He displayed yellow potions and orange potions and discussed their properties and how a swig of one of these little elixirs can tip the scales of battle in Cove’s favor. He ended by telling each of them they have potential and their skills were maturing.
Once the lesson was over, it was time for some field work! With a flick of his hand, Kas forced open a magical gate to the Cove cemetery. Kas instructed the recruits to clear the area. To their horror, the cemetery was crawling with vile undead creatures. With the lessons from their teacher fresh in the recruit’s minds, the damned quickly fell to the Arcanist’s onslaught of spells. Their ring leader, the lich, a perversion of life that was likely spawned from the Guardian himself, proved a difficult opponent. The creature wielded a dark and sinister magic of his own - necromancy. Finally, after several “Corp Por” incantations were uttered, victory was theirs.
Fie on the Undead! Methinks that with more education, motivation, and discipline, perhaps Abigail and I will become fit mercenaries one day. If we do nay die a horrible horrible death first, of course.
