I posted the following in the Ultimate Online Forums; Ideas & Suggestion thread.

Hello all!

Ok I know this might be a petty request for a change, but I think it would be useable by others and maybe even fun!

DOOR LOCKS!

Background:  I play on Europa shard (BOC), I run an Inn called the Green Goblin in the town of Cove.  In my Inn I have 4 rooms for rent and a common bathroom.
My security is set up as follows:
Owner:  Main safe and personal boxes
Co-owner: Staff allowed access to food, drink, daily cash box etc.
Friends: All other who come, to read bulletin boards, menus, jukebox.

I rent my rooms out to other players (some who have no homes) for a night, week, month, or even longer.  This would allow them to secure their items in nightstands and chest.
Because I do not wish guest to be able to get into to other parts of the Inn such a stock and such and are co-owned elsewhere.  It is unwise to have them grated access, seeing how some are from other guilds.

Solution number 1:  Allow Tinkers to make locksets for doors!  Using ingots they could craft a door lock and keys.  The higher the skill and the better grade of ingots the hard to make and “pick.”  Once made a tinker (who is an Owner or Co-Owner) could click on the lockset and get a message “which door do you wish to install in?”  He would click on that door, and TA DA it now has a lock set like a chest or small wooden box!  He would then click on his iron key and make keys for said locks!  That way you could issue them to guest and only if you had a key could you get in the room!

Then you’ll say what if they keep a key or loose it?  Simple!  They do like all good hotels do!  They change the locks!  A tinker would remove the lockset, and install a new one as before!

Owners would have a master key if there smart!  Also this would allow for players who have lock pick skills to “break in” and do a bit of thievery!  Lets say a tinker of 40 used iron ingots, those locks would be easier to pick then that of a tinker with 100 or 120 using Valorite, which should be almost if not impossible to pick.

Solution number 2:  Just add a slot to the home security another slot “Guest” You can then escort them to the room set the door to guest click on you sign out front and add the player as a guest.  Only draw back to this is, they would be allowed to all other guest rooms!  Unless you could some how allocate a certain number of your lock downs to guest locations!  Like with the Goblin, I have four-guest room and a bath, I could allocate five (5) of my lock downs for guest doors.  Set four of them for guest 1 thru 4 and the bath set for all guest

Just a thought?  I thank you for your time in reading this and hope to see it come to life.  If not oh well, play on!  Oh if you find yourself on Europa and in Cove, stop by and say hi!  Mention this posting and receive free ale!

Its a grand Idea Ed, one I am almsot certain a\has gone through developers minds. The problem with it is, housing itself is "HUGE" its your own part of the world, a section of the UO server desinated to you alone. That actually takes up alot of server space and tweeking with the housing system in any way other than adding tile sets is going to be a long time in comming. Sad I know I'm being doom and gloom, but it is a great idea. Might see it by the 24th anniversary.

P.S. your second solution works similar to being a friend of the building. But I think I get where you are going with it. . .  maybe. . .  then again I confuse easily.

They used to have a variant of this implemented. Lockpicks turned immensely rich. This was before Trammelisation though.

I didn't actually read the whole post, but I think I get the jist of it.

And yes, I wish doors could be locked using keys made my players ingame. It would be absolutely epic as lockpicking would actually be useful to thieves in rp.

Reminds me of the old days where you had to have the key of your house on you, usually on a keyring... and give actual copies to those you want to use your house.  So much more realistic.. hehe
