My Lords.
Today started out as any other. I was doing my usual duties, protecting the sanctity of the Church, whilst doing general housekeeping of the building itself. I was disturbed in my duties by the excited babbling of militia recruits running past the church doors. I thought to myself, “if only they passed the doors to the taverns as eagerly as they passed the doors of the church”. I happily resigned myself to the knowledge; I would catch them later to put the fear of the Avatar into them.
After what seemed like 30 minutes, having finished my duties, I decided to wander around the local area and minister to the locals of Cove. As I neared the city, I heard a lot of shouts coming from within the walls. I eagerly drew my sword and stepped inside the gates. Inside I found a large contingent of Militia in the middle of what seemed to be a game, some of them I recognised, other I didn’t. They were split into two teams, and were actively chasing each other and beating each other senseless for wooden chests?
My Lords, as long as I live, I shall never understand what passes for thought, through their miniscule brains ??
During the course of their game, I struck up a conversation with a local lady, and was involved in a discussion about the Avatar, when I noticed a young red haired woman, kitted out in the uniform of the Duchy of Trinsic, walk into the town with her sword drawn. I immediately drew my own sword and advanced on the girl cautiously. My own warrior instincts were crying out in alarm, surely no-one would come attacking cove alone, perhaps others were in hiding set to spring forth.
As I advanced, I heard the voice of Arc, a Militia corporal shouting. “Stand down Sentinel, the girl is mine” “Aye” I replied grudgingly, the arrogance of the man, talking to me in such a way. “Girl you are trespassing on forbidden soil, you have till the count of three to leave” shouted Arc. “I’m here to avenge my lord” she replied “I shall not leave”
With that she lunged at the Corporal. As her sword came forward at the corporal’s chest, he sidestepped and brought his sword round in a powerful stroke, and struck the girl in the back of the head with the flat of his blade, she fell to the floor unconscious.
“Sentinel, take that thing out of my sight, the sight of her offends me” “Aye” I replied once more, seething at the mans manner and tone.
The Corporal then turned his back on me, and returned to the game, and the praise of his recruits. Argh.. Such a blatant act of sacrilege, the way these recruits praise thier Corporal over our beloved Avatar!
Rest assured my Lords, I will, with your permission deal with these Heathens. Never have so many, shown so much contempt for our Diety. Such transgretions should not go unpunished my Lords.
Forgive me, I am straying from the path of my report. I shall continue.
It was as I walked away that I realised, the Corporal, so caught up in his praise, was overlooking the chance of obtaining vital information about the Duchy. So I bound the girl, and dragged her to the Militia barracks for questioning.
Within the Barracks, I handed the girl over to a Guardsman who identified himself as Ahmed. He was given instructions to secure the girl, strip her of her weapons and armaments and assist me in obtaining information from the girl.
After many long gruelling sessions, we merely managed to obtain her name “Kaelin” and that she acted alone in her attack. The girl felt she had previously failed her lord in an attack in which he was injured by our Militia. It was clear, she acts and acted simply out of revenge and honour. The girl herself simply sat glaring at us, holding the wounds on her arm, compliments of Ahmed and a heated set of tongs.
We were later joined by another of the Order, one William Edenfort, who after interrogated the prisoner, drafted a letter to the Duchy of Trinsic, demanding 150,000 gold as recompense for the acts committed by one of their number. It was then that William and Ahmed left the cells area locking the doors on the way out, leaving me alone with the captive.
I began to talk to the Girl, having admired her strength, courage and devotion; however misguided it was, as she reminded me of the strength within our own order. I talked long and hard with her about the Avatar, and found that she was genuinely interested, in the back on my mind, I was thinking of how she could be converted to worship the Avatar.
It was during our talks, that I was suddenly aware of a sharp point at the back of my neck. As I tried to turn around, I heard a voice...
“Release the girl friend, or I will be forced to act” “You dare attack me soldier? Me a servant of the Avatar?” I replied. “I haven’t attacked you YET friend, now release the girl”
I wordlessly mouthed a prayer to the Avatar and swung my elbow back in an arc, but connected with nothing but air. Frantically I drew my sword and prepared to defend myself. I was greeted with a blinding flash, as the room filled with smoke. As the smoke began to clear, I realised that the Girl and my assailant were gone.
My lords, I immediately ran to alert the Militia as to the escape, but found the doors still locked, so clearly they couldn’t have gotten through those, so I conducted a thorough search of the cells but found nothing. I ran upstairs and sounded the alarm, and made my report to the Senior Guardsman.
He simply took my report and nodded, but took no apparent actions at all? I was dismissed without a further word from the man. I had just told the man, a prisoner had been freed from within his own guarded building, and he merely dismissed me, as an adult would dismiss a crying child. Argh, the arrogance of these rank and file peasant soldiers infuriates me.
It was at this point that I returned to our church my Lords, and sought the guidance of the Avatar before writing this report for you.
Your humble servant,
Byron Wolfshelm.
