It took hours for Raiden to chop the lumber required. He worked alone erecting the pyre, loading it with fuel and kindling before hefting Vince's coffin atop. He placed his friend's helm on the coffin and paused a moment before jumping down to go and bathe in the fresh cool sea.
It was nearing the time when the other Grenadiers would arrive as Raiden towled himself dry and buckled on his armour. He allowed himself a last goodbye just as he heard the footsteps of Gimbly and Eve approach.
The Grenadier honour guard saluted their fallen Sergeant one last time before taking up their torches to ignite the pyre. Gimbly the longest serving Grenadier in the army said some last words as the flames took hold.
As the pyre raged the three Grenadiers shared some wine and spoke of glories passed and glories still to be won before heading to their bunks.
By dawns early light a lone figure stood before the glowing embers. Raiden carefully scooped up the ashes into an urn and set off on the long lonely walk from the Grenadier HQ to the Scout Tower.
