When the army was disbanded and we moved to The Company it was a conscious effort to get away from squads. The squads just couldn't be sustained and we would have line ups with a couple of Grenadiers and a Scout, no squad trainings due to lack of numbers and the army just seemed disjointed.
In the Company we are trying to encourage "specialists" rather than squads and through "custom titles" we are trying to offer a greater flexibility and depth of roleplay for your characters. In short in The Company you can virtually be whatever you want to be within the realms of low fantasy and Covian cultural roleplay.
S'funny, as much as I always wanted an Arcanist division I think we're actually on a better footing now, for any kind of group. I agree on the disjointed comment, our old groups were fine when we had high activity but during the low periods they didn't quite work. Now that we have the specialists it's far better, ironically we're closer to any kind of squad as a lump that we were as separate groups. What I mean is, yes we're mercenaries, but for example some of us are Arcanists and can group together for battles as a squad would have (while at the same time presenting a unified front instead of a disjointed one).
The same goes for scouts, shield bearers, archers and so on. We can address situations in a number of different ways, we can utilise various different strategies on the battlefield, while at the same time not having to worry about being bogged down by running several different factions within one big faction.
We've got the best of both worlds....
A solid force, but a solid force of specialists.
